I imagine quite a few here are photographers, based on some of the excellent pipe shots. i dabble, and thought I’d start a thread to share off topic photos. I imagine there may be one but didn’t find it. These are two shots I took at sunset tonight, from a little bridge over Oyster Gut, a small tidal creek that runs by my house. Unfortunately I was dog walking and didn’t have my camera, just my cell phone. Very unexpected since it’s been solid rain/clouds all day. It was pretty nice to be standing between the setting sun and a most beautiful rainbow.

Very nice photos. I have a lot of beautiful scenery around me, but it's not dramatic like that, and there are so many trees. I just can't figure out how to catch the beauty I see.

I throw away most shots, the beauty of digital photography is the luxury of experimenting. If you play around with framing things and composition, you might find you have a better eye than you imagined.

Beautiful, Dan. We do have a few photographers around here. Maybe they'll pipe up.

Yes, there are a few here. I did photography professionally and owned a camera and photo supply store including custom processing for 12 years. I rarely mention it because I lost most of my passion around it with the end of the film era, plus I only turn out relatively mediocre images anymore for posting.
I’ve noticed a fairly high percentage of photographers in the pipe smoking community for whatever reason. Some in the business, Ernie Q of Watch City Cigars and Pipes was a professional photographer prior to the tobacco business for example.

I would guess Ernie was not a portrait and wedding photographer. That doesn't really seem like his personality. Or maybe that's why he got out of it.

I think there are a lot of cooks and musicians in this community as well. I admit to being very much a rank amateur, but invested some time and money in the hobby when I moved to the coast. There’s a lot of wildlife and landscape just begging to have their pictures taken round here

I do know he used a lot of Ektachrome, so I would guess he was photographing things he didn’t have to talk to.

Somewhere on here are some of @legend lovers photos from Northern Ireland. I had one printed on glass and haven't gotten around to hanging it yet.

Of the three endeavors NJDan brings up in this post, I engage in two. I do not cook--wish I could cook because I love to eat. But I play acoustic instruments (guitar, Celtic mandolin, Irish bouzouki, fiddle) and I used to dabble in photography and exhibited in a local gallery for awhile. Here is an interior shot of a Civil War fort on my quiet little island off the Alabama coast. I was amazed at the symmetry of the brick work: This is from my "flower" phase. It didn't last too long.

I knew about your photographic interests, but not the acoustic instrument stuff. I'm just now starting to try to dip back into the acoustic guitar, myself. Well, right at the moment, I'm just trying to build up my calluses while my sprained left wrist heals, but the idea is to play a little, again.

Completely different. 😁 That’s true. The Fort I had in mind is Fort Delaware, on an island in the bay. It was used as a POW camp in the Civil War, and fun fact: there is a cemetery across from it in NJ that is the final burial ground for both Confederate POW’s and Union guards who died there.

I used to work in a building on Buffalo Bayou that was built on top of a civil war POW camp. It had steps out of the basement that went down to the bayou. I used to have to go down to the basement at 1am to relight the boilers so we had air conditioning for the night shift, and I often heard the sound of chains being dragged up the stairs. At least they stayed on the bayou side of the big, thick steel door m

I disagree with the Yankee fort business. Fort Gaines was named after General Edmund Pendleton Gaines, a Virginia native, and was built in 1821. I know nothing of Fort Delaware, but would be surprised if it is of a significantly different vintage. As an aside, Gaines died in New Orleans and is buried in Mobile's Church Street Cemetery--not far down the road from Magnolia Cemetery where Braxton Bragg is buried.

Here is a section of Magnolia Cemetery--"Confederate Rest." I stood just to the right of Braxton Bragg's final resting place when taking this shot. One of the things I enjoyed about dabbling in local photography is that I learned a lot about history that is slightly off the beaten path.

I figured Ron was just joking on that comment. You are right - these forts were built as coastal defense on similar plans, mostly by the federal government. There were numerous forts built on Pea Patch Island where Fort Delaware stands but the civil war era fort dates to the 1840s, so not far off 1821. The brickwork is very similar to your photo (if not the same). I am enjoying your photos and agree that part of the fun is learning about things through photography. I’ve learned quite a bit about birds after trying to take their pictures. Good stuff.

I was editing some images and thought I’d share a couple shots of the local eagles. We have a few families in the area, and they’re getting active again. This is an older shot, when a big fine fellow jumped on a piling right near me when I actually had my camera and long lens in hand. These are impressive fellows, but they don’t get along with the osprey. And the osprey usually come out on top in a bird fight.
