I smoked some King Charles a few years ago and loved it. Later, after a long time of hard looking I scored another tin, which I've been hoarding zealously until I cans stands it na mare, as Popeye used to say.

It's not like a Latakia blend is going to turn into something new and cool with age on it.
Just pop that tin, and enjoy it. Enjoy it in its prime, not when it's old and weak.

Granted that. But it's only been a couple of years. Also, I'm in an odd group, I like tamed latakia or latakia in the background. I've smoked long-cellared heavy latakia blends like 30 yr. old Craven which taste great to me.

King Charles barely has any Latakia in it. I like English blends when they have around 10 years of age on them. With age the flavor melds and you get more of an idea of the intention of the blender and not a blend overpowered by the Latakia.

That strengthens my resolve. I smoked my first tin of it a long time ago but I regarded it as more of a Balkan-forward blend than a Latakia-forward one, much less a lat bomb.

OK, so I tried this this afternoon on a briar pipe (Edwards) and it's a different story. A much more enjoyable smoke all round.

Ok, I'm smoking this right now, and I'm part way through my first bowl. It's VERY light. I can't say I feel like there's a whole lot going on here. It's not bad, by any means, but I'm having a hard time really tasting much. There's a slight hint of something sweet, maybe slightly floral, that I'm picking up. The Latakia is way in the background. This stuff couldn't bite you if you gave it teeth and smacked it in the face. I like the shag cut, and I'd have thought it would be a little more in your face because of that, but it's not. I'd kind of expect this more from a house like Sutliff or Stokkebye. It just doesn't have that signature well-aged British/Germain's profile. It burns spectacularly. I like it, and wouldn't turn it down, but that's about it. I'll smoke the tin, but I wouldn't seek it out - especially since it's expensive, and hard to find.

I've never been able to be that decisive about a blend midway through my first bowl...or even after one full bowl for that matter. Unless it's something I REALLY don't like or REALLY love, I'm usually at the 1-2 oz mark before I pass judgement.

Honestly, this one was so understated and light through the entire bowl, it was surprising. Usually with a blender like Germain's (I've only had several Esoterica blends), the flavors are pronounced - sometimes to the point where it tastes less of smoke and more like raw tobacco. This blend didn't have any of that. It was on the softer side of subtle. I'll smoke more of it, in different pipes, but my first impression was what I stated. I will surely correct myself if it somehow changes.

Legend Lover King Charles is one of my favorite light English blends. It’s great early in the day with black coffee. Unfortunately, it’s rarely (if ever) available in the US. The last tin I bought was from Pipestud, and that was over a year ago. My advice is stock up.
