Esserman was one guy who got me interested after reading some of his writings about large pipes. They're just so darn expensive!

I doubt briar like that comes along everyday, that blast is pretty magnificent. Having said all of that, I really don’t touch my large bowled pipes that much. I imagine that Esserman’s 7 day bag for travelling is as big as my carry on luggage.

I don't remember who the maker was, but they started at $400+ 7 years ago. That should make them over a thousand now.

Could never understand the appeal of having a monstrous pipe (There's just no polite way of phrasing that, is there?) I like to be able to read or work while I'm smoking, and can't imagine doing that while dangling a football between my teeth. To say nothing of their capacity; Sherlock Holmes could handle a three-pipe problem with one bowl.

I have a few pipes that deliver a hour and a half smoke and I find that they actually are more pleasurable to smoke than most small pipes.

I have a few pipes that deliver a hour and a half smoke and I find that they actually are more pleasurable to smoke than most small pipes. I don't think I've ever found a small pipe that smoked well. I've got an LHS that almost hits the mark, but the walls of the bowl are so thin that I'm afraid it'll burn up if I smoke it at a comfortable pace. I tend to smoke what I'd call a standard-size pipe (I think a Dunhill Group 4 is the measure here, though I've never owned one), since I found them the perfect balance of smoking time and convenience. And if I load one up with cube cut, or coins/flake (typical for me lately), I can easily get an hour out of it.

Here's the largest one in my collection. Haven't found the time to load it up yet. Something tells me it'd be a 3 hour smoke. ;-)

This Ardor Urano large bent billiard bowl is just around 3 inches in height and a tad bit over 2.5 inch chamber depth. This thing is a real honker in the hand but is surprisingly still clenchable. Rich Esserman basically considers big pipes to be those of 3 inch + chamber depth, I find I like between about 2-3 inch and to still be manageable.
My latest Ardor Urano Fantasy saxophone is exactly a 2 inch chamber depth and exactly 2 ounces in weight, much more manageable. A perfect reading pipe.
