I got a call tonight letting me know my mother has been diagnosed with breast cancer. I don’t know too much except she is going to the doctor next week and we will learn more. I’m going to try to head down there next week to try and take care of things for her around the house so her and dad can spend some time processing everything. Could use some good juju for a positive outcome

We will pray for your mother Scott, and wisdom for the doctors to evaluate the situation. It runs in the family of my wife, and early detection is a huge plus.

A few thoughts Scott,
I got that same call about my other in late 1990. After treatments and having one of her breasts removed, she healed and is now two months away from being 32 years cancer free. It was an emotional and difficult time but even in 1990 when breast cancer was more often than not fatal, she came through it. Fast forward to 2017 and my ex-wife (we are still best friends even though we have been divorced for over 11 years) got breast cancer and it was a type that had a historically low survival rate. She had treatments and surgeries and a rough time through that, but today feels as good as she ever did and is cancer free.
I know that my two experiences are only that and that it doesn't always work the way it did for the people close to me, but I can say with first hand knowledge that breast cancer is NOT a death sentence and while hard on everyone involved, it can be and is beaten regularly. I also know that it is very hard not to go to the worst case scenario in our minds, but that's only a possibility, not a guarantee.
I do have a piece of advice. Leave nothing unsaid with your mother. Telling her about little, even trivial things that you appreciate and love about her, things she did in the past that you appreciated, etc., will make a difference. Forgive any past indifferences. Keep humor alive in even the most trying times. Going that extra mile in letting her know that she is loved is probably the biggest thing you can do to support her.

Scott,
Wishing for the best for you and your mother. Good thoughts, good food, and much family time are what's needed. I've been dealing with my grandfather with cancer in both lungs and he starts radiation on his brain to prevent spread this Monday. My mother had a spot of it removed from the bridge of her nose about a year and half ago. Seems we're all in this lately.
