Five, even, if you count the mini that I don't ever use ...
Hi, all!
Great to be here; many thanks to whichever staff member approved my account!
I haven't smoked much of *anything* for a decade or more. What brought the hobby back to life for me was reminiscing, and the sudden realization I hadn't heard or even really thought about Steven Books - Master Tobacconist of Oregon, for almost just that long. And suddenly thus inspired, some quick fingerwork online brought the sad realization he'd passed several years ago; and I missed it. I bought blends from him back when he was the man behind the counter at Rich's in downtown Portland - before he ever got his own B&M set up in Oregon City. I missed all that, too.
Through all that, I got the vague but very real sense that I'd missed the end of an age, the passing of an old giant from a bygone era. It awakened a strong sense of mystery. A month of so ago, I couldn't begin to fathom what could actually constitute "mastery" of tobaccistry. But suddenly I absolutely had to know more. Before, I'd always just kind of taken the whole industry for granted.
But now, six new pipes and a pound or so of various blends richer, I'm beginning to get back up to speed. Thank you, Steve! You've turned one man's gaze back behind the curtain.

Glad to have you here threecobs, I have heard of Mr. Books and he had quite a reputation as a great tobacconist. Have no fear, there are a great many blenders still at work, Wilke, watch city, Greg Pease, Ken Byron, etc…
Glad to have you back in the fold!

Welcome from Chicago. I think you'll find this a rewarding journey, not just the enjoyment of leaf and bowl, but the connection with our traditions, the departed tobacconists and philosophers, and all who are still with us and joining us. "Though much is taken, much abides"--so Ulysses, in Tennyson's poem.

Every time I see your user name, my brain thinks 'Three Coins in a Fountain'. Better than “every time I think of your username, I think of a pebble in my shoe.” We had a few of those, thankfully not many that moved on from the forum.
