I've been smoking a pipe for almost 15 years, and I've never had a problem with ghosting until recently. Even notorious ghosters like Nightcap or Ennerdale don't seem to ghost after just one bowl. Now, I've found something that does: deer tongue. I purchased a few ounces of Engine 382 because I was curious about deer tongue. It ghosts after one bowl, so I've dedicated a cob to it. The thing that sucks is that I've found that I don't really care for deer tongue. I'll smoke what I've got, but I won't be buying more.

That's one of my two favorite tobaccos, have 40 pounds of it jarred. That one is very mild in deertongue, Crooner has a far heavier percentage of it.

If an everclear treatment does not work for you, I would try the salt treatment.
If that doesn’t work, Walker Pipe Repair’s ozone treatment. Speaking of briar…. A cob would be cheaper to toss.

I'll just smoke it away. Shouldn't take too long.

Eventually, the deer tongue ghost will disappear. It might take longer than with other tobaccos, but it will go away.

I'll just smoke it away. Shouldn't take too long. Smoke a pouch of M79 in it and either the ghost will be gone or you can just throw it out.

I've got a dedicated late 60's Medico Varsity paneled pipe for my Crooner pipe. It's certainly heavily ghosted at this point but a normal cleaning and then putting down a cake from a different tobacco would get rid of it when I want. I'm also in the camp that ghosting is overblown. I love Ennerdale and have frequently smoked 10-15 bowls of it in one briar pipe and then noticed no ghost after smoking 4-5 bowls of some other pure VA through it. Latakia can certainly ghost once you've smoked a bunch of bowls through a pipe but a thorough cleaning and then I'm able to turn the same pipe into a straight Virginia pipe if I wish.

I have never smoked Deer tongue and have no plans on doing so in the future.

Deer tongue is great, it's got a nice natural "herbal vanilla" flavor profile to it. Burley and deer tongue go well together for a real old codger type smoke.

Deer tongue is one of those things that tastes very different to different people. I really don't like it and I don't get any of the vanilla-is flavor it's supposed to have. Think cilantro, kale, or Laphroaig.

Overblown it absolutely is, Zach. I have smoked different tobaccos back to back in the same pipes for several years, including Dark Flake Scented, Rum & Maple Twist, Grasmere, Ennerdale and Kendal Flakes, and none of them survived 3 bowlfuls of a new tobacco smoked afterward.

I would actually try that if it was available.
