Is this the 2nd one in this series? I never tried the other one, didn't someone bring this to our group Charlie? I'm not usually a big Sutliff fan so I passed.

Yes, Uno was the first release, whimsical is tin #2.
Not sure if anyone cracked a tin, if they did, I did not see it.. very possible though.

Uno is really good, I’m glad I grabbed 8 tins when it was available. Whimsical is a VaPer with genuine St James Perique. Since I have a many lifetime supply of some fantastic VaPer’s, I will probably pass on this new one, but I’m looking forward to the next one coming out.

Stocked at SP. I may get a couple since it's got 12 VAs in it and real perique (while 99% of the market only contains Acadian Perique). I do typically buy all the limited releases, especially St. James Perique tobacco. Glad that C&D have now secured a major contract to put real St. James into their blends going forward. Prior to, all the real St. James has been going to American Spirit cigarette company.

Thanks Zach, a couple bucks cheaper at SP also.
Great news about C&D!

While it might be a good/great tobacco it does not have “true St James parish perique.“ True in this context would mean that the tobacco was sown, grown harvested and barrel pressed in st James parish. Whimsical is not that. It is burley from other states processed in st James parish. Now that in and of itself doesn’t make it good or bad. It just means that advertising it as “true st James parish perique” is not truthful. There is only one true st James perique at this point. Cornell and diehl. You can see the video with Jeremy Reeves and Shane Ireland from this past July. One family farm, five generations, sown, grown harvested and barrel ages in st James parish.

Jeremy via Cornell & Diehl has partnered with Heritage/31 Farms as one exclusive grower in St. James, however they are not the only growers of St. James Perique, and there are several small growers and processors there in the triangle. What is in the Whimsical special release by Sutliff is genuine St. James Perique grown and processed there by another of the farms. I'm not sure if it's from Daughter's and Ryan's farm or who, but Per Jensen via Sutliff do have partnerships with guys like Mark Ryan. SmokingPipes and others are not selling the limited release and just calling it"Genuine St. James Parish Perique" and selling a scam. This is why it's a limited release. Mark Ryan initially approached Per Jensen with his special Katerini Perique, and through someone and possibly still from Mark, he also included a special release with Whimsical that contained this limited varietal. Back in the early 2000's and actually throughout the 1990's, the genuine perique was mostly only from Percy Martin's farm as perique growing dwindled. Mark Ryan picked up the torch once Percy Martin passed and his kids didn't continue with the perique farming. At the time that L.A. Poche took up perique growing and processing, it's known that St. James was as good as extinct. The stock that was available was all aged, old stock. Once Mark's L.A. Poche really got going, they almost immediately signed an exclusive deal to sell all the real perique to American Spirits company for their perique cigarettes. For quite some time, only Acadian perique kept the market in perique. Eventually as time went on and demand skyrocketed, small perique farmers started up again around the triangle. The guys now exclusive with C&D weren't even selling on the market or doing any growing at scale just a few years ago.

I agree, Per Jensen and Mark Ryan have a pretty long history together, MacBaren and company have a stellar reputation and have no need to deceive. If they say it is real St. James Perique, that “true”, “real” or “genuine” was not put there to hoodwink their customers.

Mark Ryan supplied the St. James perique for Whimsical. To revisit what I last said, Mark Ryan was the ONLY grower of genuine St. James Parish Perique just a few short years ago. This is the definitive answer.

Mine arrived today, but I won't have time to smoke it today. Good thing is, it's already aged about seven months in these tins.

Cracked the tin and smoking now. Someone said this has Burley, but the tin does not say Burley nor do I taste it. It was not moist, ready to smoke immediately, maybe even slightly dry. I like it. It has that Sutliff sort of flavor if you know what I mean. Memory says it sort of reminds me of old Dominion 25th anniversary.
Edit to add: I heard this blend has ginger and orange liqueur. I didn't pick this up at first but I do now. It's delicately applied and is just enough to lift the blend and make it unique. A little hay, a little tart prune and pepper with ginger and orange very mild in the latter half.
A few years in the cellar will be nice.

Saw this under the review section at Smokingpipes 2 days after it sold out.
“ By: Hardus D. Product: Sutliff Whimsical Really glad to see the obsessive hoarders giving the ordinary hobbyists a chance to purchase something a little out of the ordinary... Thanks a lot!”
So Hardup complains that some buying 5 tins or so is a “hoarder”, never mind the possibility someone wants to enjoy some for another day with age on it.

A little pinch of burley is often used to adjust the mouth feel, burn rate, blend the flavors, and produce more smoke (part of the mouth feel).

My guess would be he's not entirely wrong, though. Possibly resellers more than hoarders, but still.

If it's being hoarded to smoke, it's not anyone's business.

He just came across as someone that forgot to set his alarm clock and it is everyone else's fault as he drives pissed off to work.
