Am I the only one who misses William and Darktater? I really liked those fellas, and looked forward to their daily posts and the photos of Williams pipe collection. These internet friendships are built around a connection of our love of pipes and tobacco, but over time they become no less important than the friends I come in contact with every day. In fact, in many ways the level of respect is stronger here than in a face-to-face relationship. Anyway, I hope they find their way back, and I'm sure many of you feel the same. If I ever drift off somewhere, I'll try to leave a note, so you don't have to wonder where I went.

I agree - I consider my friends here as much a friend as my friends whom I see regularly in person.

Yep, my friends on here make up for not having a real life. 😁😎🤠 Outside of my online associations, I can count on one hand the number of folks I consider friends. I have a lot of acquaintances, some very close to being friends, but only 5 people I truly call a friend. maybe I'm just too picky?

Picky? no, that's not picky, just truthful. At one time I had three true friends: two I'd known all my life, and " Ben the Great ", who I've known ten or twelve years. Many folks will call themselves your friend over drinks, and good times, but when things go sour, you'll get a better count of your friends. One of my lifelong pals passed a few years back. We had gotten to the point where we only called one another every week. When I hadn't had a call in a while, I' called and learned he was dead and in the ground. Not one of the thirty or more people who called themselves our friends called to tell me. If you're not a Facebook person, you're S.O.L

If you're not a Facebook person, you're S.O.L That's the ONLY reason I'm on Facebook and it doesn't always work.

While specifically those two were doing fine the last we heard from them, this thread is sad to me as it touches on something ephemeral about the forum relationships. More than twenty friends I've gotten close to across pipe forums have passed away in recent years and a good 100 more are totally MIA and one can assume the worst for many of these guys. At times it's easy to assume that they've just up and left and such is the internet. This is what I assume with younger people. I don't assume the same thing anymore with folks who are 75+ years old and have vanished for five or more years. At one point when PipeSmokersForum was at a peak in 2011-2013 we had hundreds of active members posting and lately can't find more than 20-30 people on any of the forums. Many folks I'd known only on a first name basis and even just a username basis who are MIA, many of them are definitely gone with no way of confirming. I guess I mean to say the opposite of what you'd said, Herb. I almost have to take these things as far more temporary and ephemeral because one day soon even more folks will inevitably vanish and I won't know what happened. I don't use any social media platforms but we might all be better connected if we actually exchanged email, phone numbers, and the like.

I feel fortunate to have connected with a real community here at the Patch. Strange, isn’t it, to call folks “friends” whom you have never met? With all its faults that is surely one of the Good Things about the ‘net. (Thanks, Algore.) I’ve put together a list of ‘net folk that I’d like to have contacted when I cross the river and rest under the trees. Seems only polite.

I've met several people on here in person a few times, but not most. Pretty much only at pipe shows. I'd like to drive up to Paul's this fall/winter and meet with a few more! There's that big geographical distance that makes it hard.

Maybe some day...

We are fortunate to have quite a few pipe smokers locally, and tobacconists that are willing to host us with great accommodations. There are always more blends than I can count to sample, fresh and aged versions, unobtainium blends free to smoke.A pipe maker that is regularly there, and always new acquisitions to handle, great estates to buy, etc…
And of course, great conversation.
For us it all started with just a couple of guys that met online and met up.

The internet is still figuring how to do some of these community things. Social media could help here, but won't, because it insists on making itself creepy and intrusive to the point that many of us don't use it.

The shop will be open that day, but Dan won’t be there and nobody will be there to give tours of the museum upstairs or the basement. The IAPSC World Championship Slow Smoke is that day at a pole barn and tent in Clio (just north of Flint). You’d be very welcome there though.

Maybe I can get Dan to sell me a few briar blocks from his stash.
