Anybody try making one of these? I find that the small end (9mm) does away with air pockets and then the larger end (‘06) evens out the bowl for a better smoke.  |

I still have my 50 cal but I don't smoke the huge pipes anymore. I guess I could run the top in a 45/70 die and fit a 45 ACP into the business end. |

Flare the 9mm a bit if you can. Makes a better fit. A dab of epoxy will do ya.  |

I have come to the conclusion that the Czech tool is the best tool for the job. True; and I always keep mine handy. But it is still fun to me to have other more ornate options. I plan to dig out my nickel cases, they've all been fired enough to warrant retirement anyhow. If I cant find any 9mm nickel cases I will use a .357 case. Flare the 9mm a bit if you can. Makes a better fit. A dab of epoxy will do ya. Will do, thanks for the heads up. |

I keep a Czech tool on my keys, but I have a ton of tampers I have made of spent brass and dowels. I've had them confiscated at shows, because they don't know what to make of them. Like I'm going to shoot someone using a 3x1/4" dowl as a projectile? Trying to explain by saying it's for smoking my pipe doesn't help!

I like a slanted tamper end. I like to slightly dome the tamp. The other end of my tampers is for helping me empty the bowl. I make all of my tampers out of twigs or antlers. Some are sanded, others are done with just a pocket knife. I have a bin full of them. Most have a waxed finish. This is my favorite. It is whittled from pine and I have used it for 7-8 years. No finish was applied. Handling it has given it that polished look. I will post pics of some others later.  |

Ha I have used a lot of different things to tamp with, finger, end of small pocket knife, homemade sticks, couple of date nails I fixed up, Stihl carburetor adjustment screwdriver, a couple that our patch friend Walt sent me they stay by the ash tray don't want to loose them, larger bolts and I am sure a few other items too.

All of my IM Corona Pipemasters and Old Boys all have built in tampers which is very convenient.

I recently lost a tamper given to me by an admirer after a show a few years ago. He had a hobby of casting pewter trinkets, buttons, and the like. The tamper was in the form of a hand grasping a long stemmed clay pipe. I really liked that tamper.

Zarnicky not understanding this thread. My husband Chuckles have very bad tamper. He yelling if I dropping tobacco on floor. He screaming at T.V. if he not liking show. Last night I asking him to wash dishes. That's when he last lost his tamper. His best tamper is when he sleeping but I love him. He still my favourite.

They are very collectible and bring pretty good money on the estate market. The Taurus actions flooded the market but it will probably bounce back.
