When I came back fro S Asia, my Grandmother wanted to go to the Dairy Day parade, I took her, got bit by a fuzzy little pekingese, kicked that Son of a bitch almost in the tuba of the marching band, no more parades for T Brad!

Part of my sense of dislocation in 2023 America comes from the many “hard men” I knew as a child and teen. They weren’t brutes. I was never around many of those, thank goodness. They were men who had done things. They knew right from wrong and good from bad and didn’t do much compromising about them. Natural heroes, I thought, even when unsung as most were. My dad was on that list, and still is. Always will be. I miss him, and men like him that we don’t seem to have many of anymore. Or maybe that’s just an intentional “media projection.” Toxic masculinity is a cruel myth that is victimizing our young people. Maybe those men are still out there. I know some. I sure hope there are lots more. I think there are some here. One of the reasons I like the place.

Yes Bob, my Dad was a hard man, but would give you the shirt off his back, I have tried to emulate him and raised my sons in the same code.

A lot of the young men could be under the right circumstances. I guess it comes from not having wars. I of course think war is a bad thing, but it seems to be the nature of man. Reading about the Romans, they weren't the most violent people, just the smartest. Some little dog was always nipping at their ankles. I'm afraid that our 75 years of "mostly peaceful" history is coming to an end in my lifetime. The young men are going to have to step up.

My dad was tough. Too young for WW1 and too old for WW2, but he grew up rough being half Indian in north central Texas in the very early 20th century. He said if he was late getting home from school his dad beat him with a logging chain. He worked all kinds of jobs and and put food on the table for 8 kids. He got his first break just before he died, an almost new home and a new Ford. He left me a broken hammer and a broken gun. That's my kind of man.

Nah. I doubt sarcasm. I’m a master at it and NO way could I ever muster up a smidgeon on your post. Your dad sounds like one of those men we always seek out when the going gets tough. Wish we had LOTS more of them. We’re gonna need them. I don’t think our enemies drink a lot of Bud Light.

My Dad was beat with trace chains for not plowing straight, my Grandfsther was a big German whose hand wouldn't fit in a extra large glove, Dad always had back troubles, but he loved his Dad. Different world then, ours may not be so good, they knew right from wrong. no shades of gray,

Watched GOOD NIGHT MOMMIE. There are apparently two of these, the original Austrian film and the later American version which was panned by the critics as a poor imitation of the original. I had thought dvd.com was sending me the American. But no, I got the original Austrian one, undubbed but with subtitles, which I prefer. (If a film is made in Mongolian I wanna see it in Mongolian.) A very strange film with an even stranger ending. No spoilers from me!

Did I ever get some BAD news just now. DVD.COM will discontinue service in September. There go my movies. O, woe!

It’s been a great service, so of course it couldn’t last. For $16 a month I got 3 disks at home at a time. Since they used UPS tracking they sent the next disk as soon as the return entered the service. That gave me, on average, about a dozen DVDs a month. Their streaming service doesn’t look like it will work me as I get only 50GB a month from my ISP.

Maybe somebody else will pick up the dvd service now that Netflix is out of the market. Price would probably go up, though.

Maybe. But if Netflix couldn’t make it work… I’d go for a degree of up-price, but there would be a limit, of course. Gouging gives me a rash.

I like to watch old movies from the '40s and '50s on YouTube, especially film noir-ish detective ones. This morning I watched "Deadline USA" with Humphrey Bogart and "Cry of the City" with Victor Mature and Richard Conte.

I am watching a French Film Noir, "Elevator to the Gallows", 1962. Miles Davis performed the music for it. A man who committed a serious crime is stuck in an elevator at the crime scene. Meanwhile, his GF, played by the beautiful Jeanne Moreau, wanders the city in search of him.

Watched a couple of old B&W YouTube movies while having my morning smokes and coffee in the the workshop. One was a classic with Jimmy Stewart and Richard Conte "Call Northside 777". The other was a pretty good 1955 B film about waterfront corruption, "New Orleans Uncensored".

Another great one is "The Narrow Margin", 1950, with Charles McGraw and Marie Windsor among other greats.
