I really enjoy Rattray's Old Gowrie. According to TR, it's a blend of Virginias, Kentucky, and a bit of perique. I'm curious what else is out there that's similar to OG. That's partly because OG is hard to get, and partly because I'm just curious.
You guys came through for me when I asked about Embarcadero (Virgentals). Whatcha got for Old Gowrie?

Interesting question, urb. I like OG a lot, myself. You could try blending something. I might do that, just for fun. I'm thinking GLP Fillmore with a little bit of ODF-RR. Or, you could try McConnell Scottish Flake or Cake (if you have any of those).

I have the McConnell blends, but haven't cracked them open, yet.

I don't have any of them open to compare, either. Might have to dig into the cellar. I'm still inclined to mix up some Fillmore with a little ODF, just to see.

I tried to get a tin as it was available in the UK, but it's out of stock everywhere.

Never had OG but for a Va/KY/Per blend, a couple from GLP come to mind ... Exhausted Rooster and Triple Play Plug.

Once I get settled, I might have to give it a try. OG is pressed to age, though. I don't have any kind of press.

I think you'll be hard pressed (oof!) to replicate that Rattray tanginess. I'd like to hear how it works out, though.

Mixed up a 50g batch, about 85% Fillmore. Smelled really nice as I rubbed out and mixed the broken flakes. Popped the whole batch into a couple pre-press molds and clamped them up. I'll leave the cakes in the molds 5 to 7 days. Then comes the most difficult part of the process - waiting 2 - 3 months in the jar. I'm sure I'll sneak a bowl before the cakes go in a jar.

From what I can tell, Old Gowrie is out of production. I'm not 100% sure, but of the products in the UK that I checked, some were labelled 'end of line'. There could be more coming in another line, but the rest of the Rattrays blends are available - it's just this one that isn't.

Did a little digging and ended up at the Kohlhase & Kopp website. Old Gowrie is still listed in their catalog and there is no mention of it being discontinued.

I just ordered 3 of the 3.5 oz tins of Old Gallery. Never had it before, but if it's gone may as well get some.

If anyone's currently looking for Old Gowrie (8 tins), Hal o the Wynd (12 tins), or Marlin Flake (11 tins), in the 3.5oz tins, one of my lesser known about distributors has this many of each in stock. tophattobacco.com
I didn't intend on buying more tobacco this week and I still wish I'd thrown in an extra tin of Marlin and tried Hal o the Wynd. I just don't often go for Rattray's. Exactly two of the Rattray's blends I've bought before have been discontinued and I typically find them either a bit too sweetened or just standard English blends.

They're a not well known source for how I typically source Rattray's, McConnell's, Peter Heinrich's, and Wessex blends. They'll often have them when everyone has been well sold out for weeks. They also don't carry most popular blends and strangely enough, they're right in the heart of Missouri. They have really great service but be careful they often have an honor limit of 1-2 of each, make sure you don't order more than that if there is a posted limited. They'll cut you off if you're a repeat offender and cancel your order.

Wow, Paddy you are certainly closer to the source...this is a revolting development! Now here, take this with a pinch of salt (or snuff)... I am probably way off the mark. Lol Let's weigh things up here - how often do I have a clue about tobacco manufacturer or anything tobacco related?

If you can deal with shag, Penny Farthing might scratch that itch. I'm a big fan of PF and OG.
