The original Tinder Box in Santa Monica in the early 70's. A basket pipe and a couple of ounces of their home Latakia blend. That was an amazing shop, as I recall. A virtual pipe smokers museum. Sat at around Wilshire and 27th Street.

Looks like it would have bee a cool hangout. www.laconservancy.org/locations/tinder-boxPretty cool sign...they ripped off the image of one of Turbocats pipes though.

In Houston we had the Pipe Pub with several locations. That's where I bought my first pipe tobacco. All gone now, but I see that they've opened a Cigar Lounge and pipe tobacco place in my old neighborhood. Up here in NE Texas, I don't know where to buy pipe tobacco. There are a few cigar shops, but the one I went into only had the Super Value and similar 1 pound bags. You never know though. I found a great shop in New Mexico on Highway 14, The Old Turquoise Trail, about 12 miles from Madrid. Middle of nowhere. I guess the owner had a dream.

I had almost forgotten about that sign. Almost supernatural looking on a foggy evening.

My first two pipes were Edwards. They were purchased at an Edwards tobacco shop in North Miami Beach, Florida back when a number of stores existed.

In a way, I have 3 "first pipes." My first pipe ever was one I made in 2010 from a lump of wood I found in the forest. I knew nothing about pipes besides what I'd read in stories (Tolkien, Verne, Stevenson, London, Hemingway, etc). Adventurers, thinkers, and crusty sailor types in those books always had pipes, and since I was signed up for an Alaskan fish processing tour, I thought I should have one too. Here it is: Got some dusty Lane RLP6 and Cherry Cordial from the back shelf of a cig store in my hometown that I smoked between shifts cleaning fish and crabs. First purchased pipe was a carved hardwood from Eastern Europe my wife got online for my first father's day, 2017. It was a desk decoration until recently, but smokes great and is now dedicated to Virgina blends. First one I bought myself was a Commoy's Lumberman from a local antique barn, March 2023.
