I tell her the truth. I save up my credit card cash back to pay for, or mostly pay for, another pipe.

What? This old thing! Seriously she doesn’t ask about the pipes and I don’t ask about her daily deliveries of shoes, jackets, purses, clothes, swimsuits, artisanal yarn and knitting $upplies not to mention the endless stuff for the grandchildren. She did pick me up a Peterson house pipe with silver cap and band a couple of weeks ago at the Peterson shop in Dublin.  |

I live alone with my cat occasionally Molly wonders why a pipe came in the mail instead of some treats for her but a few headpats and some catnip later she forgets about it .

My wife's bought me a couple of pipes, but she has never said anything. We get a package from Zulilly or eBay or Holland Bulbs every day. I rarely buy a pipe anymore, or tobacco. She's luckily never asked how much I have spent on my pipe smoking hobby.

I do what I want. She trusts me to not get carried away. That said, I haven’t bought a pipe in years and am down to a couple dozen. Been selling off all my tins too. Enough in jars for a lifetime.

Luckily, my wife appreciates the look of good grain and encourages me to buy smooths instead of blasts. 🤪
Plus, over time, I have desensitized her. After what I’ve paid for some pipes, now there’s a pretty good price point at which I know I can just buy without having a discussion. Many times, I’ve won a pipe at auction and tell her that I've won an auction. She gets a look of trepidation until I say a number and then she gets a look of relief on her face.

I've never lied to my wife about how much I have paid. I have been known to slightly exaggerate how long I have had a given pipe or gun.
