Steamworks is SO good, but I’m hesitant to open my only other couple tins anytime soon after losing most my first tin to mold. Reading that sent chills down my spine! Now I’m thinking about letting my jarred tin air out a bit. I still have seven more, but I certainly don’t want to waste any. Someone I talk to elsewhere opened two cans of Anthology last week and both were moldy in the cans. C&D seems to be occasionally carried away with the fact that water is cheaper than tobacco. Adds weight, and mold. Well, that’s no good to hear, either. I’ve not opened any of my tins of either year of Anthology. With Steamworks, I opened a fresh tin on release and got to smoke about four bowls of it before the end of the week it was entirely overtaken by thick, white mold from the bottom flakes up. Usually I’d manage to salvage some, but wash and dry some of the flakes, but it was engulfed. I did receive a refund for the tin. Overall, I’ve not had hardly any mold issues but it has happened to some really choice stuff. Darin once sent me some 1944 George Washington flake. I smoked a bowl or two of it before the whole jar went up in green mold. It smelled like George Washington, as well.

I guess I have lived a charmed life. I have held onto tins recalled because of mold issues, took my chances and aged them… no mold.
I have never experienced any mold, ever…common sense tells me that mold takes place in the sealed tins, but I wonder of living in the desert mitigates the possibility of mold?
I hope I did not jinx myself with this post.

Same. I held all my 2016 first release of Carolina Red Flake (so did Jeremy himself). It’s nothing you can manage or do. Either mold spores bloom, or they don’t. It’s based on how much MycoBan or vinegar is in the tobacco as an inhibitor.
Yes, living in the desert is also a mitigating factor. I believe that’s also how stuff sent from Arizona is able to arrive here in mid summer and explode. Have also lived in Florida briefly, during the first year of CRF release and I opened my first tin and breathed it for a day before jarring. No issues.

“ I believe that’s also how stuff sent from Arizona is able to arrive here in mid summer and explode. “
I bear no responsibility!
Sounds like something Darin would do… that cat is shady.

I really appreciate the things and samples that he’s sent! I just think it could be a factor where dormant spores can leap to life when they breathe in some humidity.

LBF in the Ron Powell morta bulldog: An excellent pipe maker that excels in putting out beauties. It is a shame that circumstances beyond his control prevented him from continuing on and getting a wider audience for his pipes. Ron is as good as the best out there.

I’m smoking some Union Square in a “Vox Pop” carved billiard held by my mid-mod crab. I suspect this is the kind of pipe you’d get if you had sent in your $1.95 on the matchbook cover turbocat posted. Complete with screw in stem, modern bowl engraving and imported briar. I don’t know much about the maker but suspect it would be from the 50’s or 60’s. It smokes well, due to good old fashioned American engineering, no doubt. Enjoy your evening friends.

It looks like you live very close to the water, Dan. Have you ever had any issues with scary storm surges?
Cool crab by the way, but it looks like he wants to snap your tenon.

We are behind a solid bulkhead and a fair elevation on pilings, but it still gets pretty scary when the moon and wind are right. Many times have had waves crashing on the bulkhead and spraying the house with water. I retreat to the mainland when they ask us to. Mainly I just stay very weather/tide aware and avoid the roads when they flood. You don’t want to drive through salt water if you want your truck frame, brake lines, et al. to have any kind of life.

Glad you have a good sea barrier nearby! Yeah, the corrosive action of salt can really make short work of a vehicle. I recently saw a video by a mechanic showing the compromised suspension of an SUV, the owner was cheating death for awhile… the suspension was literally crumbling.

Good evening to all of the Patch, we've had four seasons in one day here in the Irish North West, including a fairly heavy snow shower this afternoon; reminds me of the old Billy Connolly joke about Scottish weather, "if you don't like it, just wait for 20 minutes" 😂 Rounding the evening off with some OGS in a MM Country Gentleman. Hope you all have a great rest-of-your evening, the weekend awaits!
