Being a bit of a Falcon fan-boy it was a matter of fact that I had to read K.A. Worth´s book about the brand. I passed up on a printed version a while ago as it was quite expensive but I found out that there is a very reasonable priced Kindle-version on Amazon readily available. After having a bad experience with Amazons E-Reader and Amazon in regard of complains with the said device I was not particular keen on buying another one. But there is an app for everything, isn´t it? This one is even free and so I proceeded to download both the app and the book. Well, what can I say without being too harsh in my review? Of course there is not much information regarding this brand which is particularly strange as the Falcon is the most sold pipe in the world. It honors Mrs. Worth that she took the trouble of rummaging through large piles of her late grandfathers paperwork to unearth the history of this great invention. But to be honest if you expect technical details or anecdotes about the pipe, famous names who smoked them or even details of the early American Falcon history you´ll be disappointed. We don´t even learn if the great G.L. Hunt was a pipe smoker himself! Instead we learn a lot about the formation of the English branch and production of the Falcon . Page by page about contracts and production numbers and the hassles that the business has to overcome put the readers patience to the test. The nomenclature of the different die casters is strewn within the text and it would have been very nice from a collectors standpoint to have a chart or something the like for reference. A timeline on the appearance of the several models would have been nice too but no such things are included. Instead the book seems to be something like an accountant would have loved to read. Figures upon figures, extracts form business letters and stories of the occasional move of parts of the company to another place. I don´t want to appear unjust in my evaluation here but I had hoped for a very different book. As I said, we owe Mrs. Worth that we have some infomation about the brand at least but if you are looking for an entertaining read about a pipe brand you better move one. Thank god that the pipes are much better than the book! At Euro 3,09 it doesn´t do much damage to your wallet though, so if you´re curious give it a go anyhow.

Thanks for sharing, Frank. I think I have this one in my cue on Kindle.
Regardless of what people think about Falcon, it's an interesting story and they have a pretty distinct following. I'm looking forward to reading the book.

Grimpeur, have you read this? I'm afraid to say no I haven't. I am not a big fan of e-readers, and I didn't jump on the printed version when it was available. I would go through it if I came across an inexpensive copy, but it's never called out to me demanding to be read. But I sure like smoking them!

I think Mrs. Worth was G.L.Hunt's granddaughter. She also sold old unsmoked Falcons on Ebay for a while. I happen to have 9 of them. I also read the book too, not a "page turner". It did contain some interesting facts about the evolution of the Falcon.

I wish I was there in time to grab a few of those old Falcon! Anyway, sometimes you´re lucky and so I have another Falcon-Set on the way to me from Australia.

Falcons were first made right here where I'm from, Fort Wayne, Indiana. We had a made in Fort Wayne Indiana Falcon in our pipe shop recently, but it sold before I could go buy it. Had 3 or four bowls made here as well. After so many years in the 1940's, production moved to Chicago for a short while before moving to the U.K.

Like you said not a real page turner. I skimmed it and put it in my tobacciana library.

Wait, I suppose I should ask. Who is G.L. Hunt?
Ohhh, George Hunt. He was a marketer for Falcon. Got it.

This is my set of American-made Falcons. It is easy to distinguish: The stem is only marked with "FALCON" and the bowls have no gasket. This set was smoked and I refurbished it.

A very nice set, Frank. I have one Falcon which is made in London, but the bowl has no gasket on it. Would that mean when I got this as an estate I possibly have a mismatched American bowl on a London made frame?

Not so much as a mismatched combination as there was a transitional period. So it could be an older US bowl on a newer UK frame. There are no "original" pairings with Falcon because you can buy stem and bowl separately.

okay, I can't contribute to this topic, but I can't resist commenting that every time I see the title to this thread it makes me think of the song from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang where Grandpa sings "up from the ashes grow the roses of success...."

I have the eBook and although informative and a quick read, the layout and timeline of activity can be hard to follow because of how it was written. I would say it's is worth the price (2.99) of the eBook, but not more than that. I can only guess it wasn't easy to go through all the documentation to write it, but for me I could tell if was written in chunks and not laid out and organized for a proper flow to read. I do have one Falcon black anodized I believe called the Hunter and only one Briar bowl (Genoa). I don't reach for it often but it smokes just fine.

I’ll have to take a look. I have one Falcon that does not get used as much as most of my other pipes. I do like it and should show it more love

It has been awhile. I do wonder what he is up to these days.
I'll try and drop him a line and see if we can rustle him up.

FYI, I emailed with Frank yesterday. He is doing well, just taking a little time off from the forums.
He sends his regards and Thanks for the concern.

Thanks to Frank, I was able to share some Strang at the WCPS in Vegas...after we depleted Europe from Strang availability, he probably has to lie low for awhile.
