I just got back from from my local home improvement store.Had to buy some of those new age squiggly light bulbs., A lady there had a Greyhound dog with her.The dog was so thin that his ribs showed to the point that you could actually count them..Is it normal for a dog to be that thin?

, those doge are generally thin because they are used for racing. I wonder if she adopted the greyhound from a rescue place. Once their racing careers are over the owners have little use for them. Very sad but many step us and adopt them into loving homes.

Larry like John said their breed is rail thin, good dogs, but as John said no use for em by owners who race them. Should have a home like retired Thorobreeds, but they don't. You can judge a mans character in how he treats his animals.

My wife and I are active in fostering rescue dogs now for about five years. We are in contact with Spanish and German organisations to rescue the Spanish Greyhound (the Galgo). We have two of our own and always one fosterdog until it found it´s new home here in Germany. Like John and Brad said those sighthounds are very thin but it´s their natural physiognomy. Normally English Greyhound don´t show too many ribs, the Spanish Galgos a few more and the Arabic Salukis all of their ribs without being too thin. The English Greyhound reaches speeds in of over 45mph and is thus the second fastest land animal! Excess body weight is counterproductive in this but the dogs are fed just like normal dogs. Unfortunately the racing for money in England and Ireland or the hare huntings in Spain are deadly for these wonderful animals. Every years thousands of them die a gruesome death or are simply put down in the state-run animal shelters. At least professional dog racing is illegal in Germany.

This is Patch, our latest fosterdog, an Irish Greyhound and ex-racer. Meanwhile he has found a new home but is still very ill and a lot of money goes to the vet.

I have a whippet. Food bowl is always available, he sleeps 23 hrs a day, and still skinny as a rail.

Ours do easily sleep over 20 hours a day, they are like cats in this! The Africanus-breed looks interesting. Sometimes it takes years for a new breed to be internationally accepted. Even the Spanish Galgo is only an official race since the 1970ies.

This is our current fosterdog Ebano. He is a proper Spanish Galgo and is only three years old and of course still too thin. He had a hard time in his first 1.5 years as he was force-trained on a leash behind a motorcycle. His bones and joints were much too weak back then and so his ankles are malformed now. He has a kind of wobbly gait because his right hind leg seems have to be broken at one time in the past. This might as well be a result of the forced training he received. Anyhow, he is still fast and loves running. He is still very shy when face to face with me. Bearded men with hats are what many Galgos learned to fear! This is just one example of the cruel fate many Galgos have to endure in Spain every year again and again. We love him to bits and are sure that we will find a good home for him soon.
