I enjoy most aspects about smoking a pipe. The collecting, the quiet contemplation, the smell of smoke lingering in my office, the somewhat ethereal allure of the activity itself. It's great.
But a lot of the tobacco tastes the same to me.
I hear people review tobaccos and mention the "slight taste of apricots" or "the fleeting taste of summer hay", "the suggestion of raisins dancing on your palate." I get none of that. Basically, I can smell it and that's it. I enjoy that. I've tried mainly aromatics, but a few English / VaPers (I may be categorizing them wrong, so if English and Vaper aren't comparable, forgive my ignorance). Suffice to say, I've had a few (though not many) and there isn't a big difference. Am I weird? Does that come with time? Or is it all just a huge pretentious lie (you guys can tell me now, I'm one of you).
Thanks, ~K~

There are plenty of us that have taste buds that are unable to pick up the complexities of different blends, and I am at the top of that heap. Reading reviews though, and contemplatively smoking a blend after reading the reviews, sometimes I can ferret out a hint of the taste that the reviewer stated.
The difference between Vaper and English is pretty remarkable though.
Sometimes cleansing the palate before smoking helps, for that I like Club soda with mint leaf...the nice thing about that is that if you are out and about smoking in an environment where it is permitted, a decent bartender willl assume that you are a designated driver and the drink(s) are free.
Since you ended up here...to ask the question is to answer the question....

The difference between Vaper and English is pretty remarkable though. There's a good chance I have them confused, then. I smoked some Frog Morton, which I've read is an English and a Virginia house blend my daughter got me whose name I can't recall. That may not have been a VaPer, or even a true Virginia. It might have been bagged by a woman named Virginia for all I know. Thanks, trailboss!

I too/also (whatever) have troubles finding the flavors of fruit and berries and all that. The aro's I enjoy most are the vanilla topped blends. can taste and feel the creaminess. What I tell folks is that if you enjoy the blend, don't worry that you can't taste the same things a reviewer can or that you taste something completely different. Don't over think or complicate your leisure. Try a few more blends, read a few more reviews, but most importantly RELAX and enjoy your smoke.

I do enjoy just smoking a pipe and being a boss doing so. However, I'd like to grab a tobacco and take a hit and say, "Oh! There it is! Now I see what people are talking about."

It will happen, almost everyone has that one blend or type of blend that just sings to your senses. For me it was the English/oriental blends. Not that I could pick out the individual tobacco flavors, but that intense moment where the world stopped and I was blissfully caught up in the essense of the moment. You may very well find that combination that your palette can decipher, I can't say I have.I have found that when I set fire to FMC,LL 125th Anniversary, or many other english blends, I believe that "I get IT".As you can tell my ambition is not to be a reviewer but to be that silly old man on the porch with a cloud of smoke circling my head.If you're intent on tasting the flavors such as the reviewers, you may want to order samples of the "Blending"tobaccos to smoke as they are to acquaint yourself to their flavors and characteristics. Some are blessed with an exceptional palette others have to educate theirs.

when I first started smoking all I smelled was smoke! lol. But now it seems I'm starting to pick out aromas as I smoke -- I could always smell it in the tin, but not as I smoked. Now I am. Not sure if it is experience or just better tobaccos, lol.

When you first start smoking, you're smoking the pipe way too hot, burning the tobacco til it's scalding your tongue, and just not in the rhythm and swing of discerning the nuance flavors yet. Makes sense at first that you feel like you're just tasting hot tobacco. Slow down your smoking as slow as you can smoke without letting the pipe go out. Relax. Get your packing right, as you slow it down over the next few months you'll start to pick up on flavors. Even though there are many similar blends done over and over, there are hundreds of unique blends with unique flavors. This also very much depends on what tobaccos you're smoking and other factors.
Many, many factors. One good thing Matthew pointed out above is you don't know what to expect yet, you don't know what Perique tastes like on its own rather than in a blend, and not enough to taste how much of the component leaf of red Va is in the blend. As he said, smoking the tobaccos individually will show you what the leaf cure and shade tastes like. Perique is sour, prune like, raisin, and more so cinnamon raisin when it's blended with good Virginias. Stoved Virginia and bright Virginia mixed tastes like fresh baked bread, a little hay and grassiness depending on the grades. Pure Latakia tastes like a smokey campfire but has different regions and qualities. Age on tobacco can further smooth a certain varietal and make for even more nuance. This is stuff that you pick up over years, and not in days or weeks.

Toppings are the hardest thing to pick out in a blend. I hit it right more than I miss -and I have a sensitive palate - but even blenders like Russ O will tell you toppings can be hard to decipher.
As for the tobaccos themselves, it takes time to become familiar with them and what they can offer. I've smoked nearly every tobacco varietal straight in order to figure out what they are like. Sometimes, the mixing of varietals - not to mention the addition of toppings - can cause unexpected flavor reactions.

Jim makes an excellent point about toppings. Leaf varietals themselves are one thing, but once they throw in tonquin bean, Rum, anise, heliotropin, and a bunch of other flavors it's gets really hard to taste it all. Gawith Hoggarth & Co. has many Flake tobaccos with 3 or 4 or more toppings on top of 2-3 different tobaccos and it gets hard to taste a whiskey topping under heliotropin or the vanilla flavor of tonquin.

It comes with time..one day I opened a new to me blend of tobacco and sniffed it for a few minutes...then slowly smoked it..and it was kinda neat because I started to notice what the flavors were in the tobacco...I still can't find citris..grassy..hay like.. I can pick up on the earthy..raisin,prune,fig taste...nuttiness... It does take time but what helped me is smelling the pouch/tin/bag for a few minutes and let the aroma linger in your nose so your brain remembers what you just smelled and can help connect the dots between smell and taste..
I just started to notice what different tobaccos bring to a blend in the last couple of years and in the last month it has been easier to pick up what each tobacco will taste like in a blend...maybe playing with whole leaf to make my own tobacco has had something to do with it..not sure but very possible!

Something I did too and it helped a lot! It is quite fascinating how for instance Perique changes the somwhat bland taste of pure Virginia into pure magic. Try the stuff pure and I guarantee you abandon it in disgust! Golden Sliced was a pleasant surprise for me and I believe there is a bit of Perique in it but I might be wrong about that. The citris? I am still looking for that too....

Not to bump my own thread, but I've discovered something briefly touched upon in this thread. If I have a drink when I smoke (black coffee for me), it seems to wash away the smokey taste and I can taste the flavor(s) of the tobacco more. I tripped upon this by mistake drinking some coffee the other day. It was Frog Morton and the taste of the blend suddenly became apparent (it was exactly like the tin smelled). The next morning, I tried again with an aromatic (cherry) and could really taste the cherry flavor.
As always, your mileage may vary.

Doesn't seem to work as well. Also could be my palate is numb.

Everyone has a different chemical makeup. Some have the ability to pick out flavoring, like Jim. I am more like you though, just can't pick out the things I read about in the tobacco reviews.

I have noticed the longer I have been of the cigs (3 months now) the more flavors I am picking up. It will take years if ever to get to the point of picking up subtle flavors. And even when I do I can't put into words how to express properly other than " I like that blend" or the harder yet " I don't like that blend".

I've only been smoking the pipe for a couple of years, and don't have a sophisticated palate. So, subtlety is lost on me. But the big, loud differences between burleys, va/pers, Englishes, etc are noticeable. And heck, there ain't no mistakin' Capn Black Grape! 😆

Yep; sounds like me I have a three star rating system: 1 - Shite. Won't buy again. (But never say never. I have often returned to a 1 star tobacco after months or years only to find it marvelous ) 2 - OK. Won't buy again. (But will gladly accept as a gift! ) 3 - Good. Will buy and cellar.

I had to look this up... a grape flavored pipe tobacco? Good lord. And yet, it has a bunch of favorable reviews. I don't think I'll be trying it, though...

It's the only one I want to try! Anyway, I'm convinced that some of the taste thing is down to power of suggestion. H&H Pine Grove is a case in point. I'm convinced that there is no damn pine flavor or topping in that blend, but lots of reviews think there is because of the name and description

Also I've yet to try it, but I've read about how many think Erinmore is pineapple flavored because of the pineapple emblem on the tin. It took me nearly a year to get all the tobacco types straight in my head. And I couldn't figure out how so many blends could have the same two or three types of tobacco in it and taste so different. I'm still not tasting dried figs or citrus in anything I smoke, but there have been more and more smokes where I get great flavors that I hadn't previously.

When I first started smoking pipes I tried bunch of burley aros. They all tasted the same, and even when I learned not to smoke them hot I never found them to be very pleasant. At first I thought I didn't like aros, but then I realized it must be the burley so I tend to avoid burley-heavy blends. But then on occasion a VA blend will be bitey - and just as bad, *harsh*. Like stinging your sinuses and making you feel like you got smoke inhalation damage in a burning building even without inhaling.
I've found that for me, the most processed tobaccos are the smoothest, easiest to smoke, and have the flavors I enjoy most. Latakia, Orientals, Dark fired, Black Cav. I can do some burley in a blend if it's skillful, like Boswell's or Cult aros, and do like straight VA on occasion, but could live without them as long I have sweet and/or smoky.

Your taste will change as you go. Right now im into aromatics, mainly Mac Baren 7 Seas Regular and the royal. With myself if i find a good aro i will stick to it. I still smoke english but cant do them all the time because they tire my palette at times. Everyone is different though but sometimes with most smokers you have to switch off to recover your tastes.
