Enjoying a Preston Sturges DVD Collection. Feels good to laugh out loud in these volatile times. Christmas In July last night and later this evening it will be The Great McGinty. I probably have the same collection. Preston Sturges was a genius. Who would have thought that Brian Donlevy would be good in comedy? Sullivan's Travels is one of my favorite comedies.

Last week I saw Dunkirk in IMAX, and really enjoyed it. The only thing I found iffy was how scenes changed timelines without any sort of indication. But I'd give it 4/5 stars.

Watched the 1958 Dunkirk movie. John Mills, Bernard Lee among other notable faces.
This story begins as the retreat to the beaches just starts with the BEF putting up a fight as the German advance.
Many storyline parallels between the two movies, as expected.
Sadly, no subtitles and some of those accents are a bit hard to follow.
I give it an "8" out of "10".

Took my son to a screening of the new Blade Runner sequel at the Steven Ross theater on the Warner Brothers main lot. This is a great place to watch a movie. The sound system is state of the art. The chairs are extra comfy, all sight lines are great, and the audience actually watches the film rather than behave like they're sitting in their own squalid living rooms.
Blade Runner 2049 is a stunningly mesmerizing film that continues the tale of a dystopian future several decades after the events of the first film. The look of the film is ravishing, capturing the "film noir" look of the original with epic environments and seamless integration of live and digital elements. I can't say much about the plot without spoiling it, but I can say that it further enlarges the Blade Runner universe in ways that thoroughly engaged me during the over 2 hr run of the film. The critical hubbub is well deserved and this may become a classic that lives well beyond its initial release. It is certainly a classic, and I can't recommend it highly enough.

Looking forward to seeing it in a theater. Loved the original. Glad to read the "review". Thanks.

I watched Apollo 13 finally, it was only because I was getting a demo of a friends HT setup. I sold him my 8ft long subwoofer that has (4) 18 inch drivers in it. He also has some 7 ft. Tall, 285 lb. main speakers and a 160" diagonal PJ screen. Awesome, and finally a movie with no violence in it.

Well I guess so!
That is pretty cool that perks come with the job... Had Jack Warner really been a visionary though, he would have known that Jesse would come riding up to the silver screen and bought Barlings by the gross through the decades in order to lock the guy in.

Never seen the movie, read about it.... after an experience like what they had...I can imagine that they had the cleanest arteries on the planet. I echo your thoughts on violence... I train for dealing with violence visited upon me, and can appreciate violence when necessary to convey a story line all good, but when the movie crosses the boundary, it just doesn’t interest me.. I have no problems changing horses mid stream at that point.

That must have been some sonic experience!

Atomic Blonde set in Berlin as the wall is about to fall a female spy is sent in to east Europe to fetch a list of spies that are held in the head of a eastern defector. 80's soundtrack with some great tunes captures the era and Charlize Theron just plain kicks butt all through the movie. The movie ends with a great finish with a twist. Filmed the old way like a good 1950's spy movie. 8/10

Many moons ago, my dad came out to California for a visit, I took him to see Rambo and a Schwarzenegger flick where he shot a belt fed from the hip an buried an axe in a guys crotch at the same time.
After the two movies were over, my dad said “If them two guys had been around some years back, my unit could have stayed home from Vietnam and Korea with them bad asses on duty the way they pile up bodies.
Now I am like my dad.... the wife likes Bruce Williams die hard type flicks as an escape... I am the realist critic giving unwanted commentary.... can’t help myself.

Well then you will get to see her from the backside durning a bath scene. She also does a clothed lesbian scene. She also smokes cigarettes like Bette Davis and uses a old school lift arm lighter.

Lara Croft:Tomb Raider (2001) 4/10 Angelina Jolie delivers an utterly forgettable performance in a bland, topical action film based on the popular 90's video game.
White Palace (1990) 7/10 A one night stand leads to true love between a middle aged waitress in a burger joint (Susan Sarandon) and a young, trust fund yuppie.(James Spader.) The characters are developed and likable and there is a happy ending that will leave you smiling and saying 'bullshit' as you return to your cold, lonely, loveless existence.
The Deuce (2017) 8/10 I have watched all five of the episodes so far available of this HBO series and it is pretty good. Top-notch casting/acting. The atmosphere is incredible. The show takes place in Brooklyn/Manhattan New York in the early 1970s. A lot of attention to detail, which is paramount in a period piece. The overall story focuses on the seedy side of New York; following the lives of pimps, prostitutes, bartenders, cops, and wiseguys. Not recommended as family entertainment. haha
Selena (1997) 4/10 for the film 9/10 for young Jennifer Lopez A biopic on a the recording artist/entertainer of the same name. I was too young to remember her, but whatever- I'll watch a film about anything so-long as Jennifer Lopez is romping through every shot in flattering garb; aside from J'Lo, the film is 'meh.' Overall it felt cobbled together and had the production of a made for tv movie.
Just what has been on tv so far today. I admittedly only pay attention a small part of the time as I am usually reading, crawling the web etc.

Last movie watched: "Oblivian" with Tom Cruise. I give it 7/10. Not a bad post apocalyptic tale. The drones were pretty cool. Cruise was Cruise. No surprises.

We just saw Blade Runner 2049 yesterday. We went to the "Dolby" theater in the multiplex for the first time. The seats were nice recliners and the picture was fantastic. The problem was that the volume of the sound was way too high. I put out my sound level app and measured 125 dB, which is the limit for the meter. Long stretches were above 118 dB, and some conversations reached 109 dB. My wife had her fingers in her ears for most of the film. There were only a half dozen people in the theater for the 3pm show. As near as I can tell, Sablebrush52's review is dead on. It is a detailed, deeply involved, thoughtful film that deserves multiple viewings. I have been to a lot of rock concerts, and I used to have Klipsch LaScala loudspeakers in a 15 x 20 room. I have never been exposed to an that loud.

I also watched Blade Runner 2049. Was surprised to see that it drew an older crowd and the younger gen. (35down) did not go for some reason.

For that very reason, I have gotten into the habit of taking a handful of foam earplugs when I go to movies anymore. I have tinitis and could not handle that kind of volume. I bring extra for whoever goes with me. Not fun having to sit there with your fingers in your ears or making do with toilet paper earplugs.

I read up on the standard for loudness in the theater. It is supposed to be a base mix to 85db with 20db overhead to 105db peaks. The new action moves are being mixed with most range and more above 100db. The Transformer movies are hitting 130db on a properly calibrated system. Take the mostly empty theater, (people absorb sound) and you have deafness in the making. My ears are still ringing 36 hours later. So, Hollywood is doing it on purpose. They really don't understand the term "self control". Or decency.

Have seen every version of the original and consider Blade Runner one of the most boring and overrated movies ever made. To watch a new version would take a lot of convincing, though I respect the opinions of those who have posted positively about it.
Don: I deal with Tinnitus too. Interestingly, I took some Guaifenesin (Mucinex) lately & it reduced ringing in my ears by 50%. ( Not a medical fact, just personal experience).
