"Sneakers". I give it a 6/10. Dated, but entertaining enough. And I don't really care for Redford as an actor. Sydney Poitier was decent in it. Ben Kingsley as well.

"Siccario, Day of the Soldado". I enjoyed it, a lot of uncomfortable reality in it for some. I'm not sure it's as good as the first one, "Siccario", but I enjoyed it more. I really did not like Emily Blunt's DEA character in the first one, but she wasnt in this one.

Wife took me to Rocketman. 6.5 out of 10. I like musicals, but this was a bad movie.

Recently watched "Deadwood - The Movie" on HBO. The movie was good, but the series was better.

Only just got around to watching John Wick. Normally I don't watch real life shows with heaps of violence. There's something about a vigilante who goes about taking out the bad guys that appeals to the masculine human psyche.
Keanu Reeves plays his role well. His character seems emotionally detached, which would be expected from someone who earns a living as an assassin. I'd give John Wick an 8 out of 10.

Last night was The Talented Mr Ripley and tonight I'll soon view Ripley's Game, as I rewatch some of my VHS titles. Highsmith's books were better, but film adaptation is welcome.

Finally saw Avengers End Game. A complete mess. So many super heroes and I couldn't identify most of them. 3/10.

MIB International - Much better than I expected. Not quite as good as the first but better than 2 or 3. Still wish they were more like the original comics run, but something is better than nothing. Loved the Thor homage and having Thor and Valkyrie back together again.

My son-in-law put The Ballad of Buster Scruggs on last night. Still processing, not really sure what I think. Some of it was entertaining, some of it not. Videography was outstanding. I guess I'm trying to find an overall point or theme to the whole thing, and not having much luck. Im...perplexed. Movies don't usually do that to me.

Shake Hands With the Devil - I.R.A., Black and Tans, the Troubles. Now familiar story line, less so in this fine 1959 B&W film. James Cagney in top form, with strong support from often overlooked, Don Murray. Nice bad girl role for Glynis Johns. Definitely recommended.

Just watched "Hidden Figures". It was pretty good. They messed with the true story a bit, unecessarily in my opinion. Still, a good film. I give it 7/10.

Don Murray was also good. Liked him John Ford's "The Last Hurrah" of the same year.

...watching the original "True Grit" with John Wayne. One of my "top 10" films. 5 out of 5 stars... Yes, that was a great movie for its time. Holds up well. Many excellent performances by supporting characters: Jeff Corey's Tome Chaney, "Everything happens to me! Now I am shot by a child." Robert Duvall's Lucky Ned Pepper. "I call that bold talk for a one-eyed fat man." Strother Martin's Colonel Stonehill, "I will pay a total of two hundred dollars to your father's estate when I have in my hand a letter absolving me of all liability from the beginning of the world to date!" Jeremy Slate, Dennis Hopper, so many others. Glen Campbell was surprisingly effective as LeBeouf. I was never a fan of his singing back in the 1960s. He nailed this character. I cannot recall Wayne playing a less than heroic and somewhat comic character previously. That took some courage but I guess he was comfortable with his status. He did a fine job as Rooster. I loved the dialogue and its seeming period authenticity. Many archaic words like "notorious thumper" for drankard. Regionalisims such as "Double tough". The writing was quite good and the novel is a pleasure to read, too. Then much of it was filmed in glorious parts of Colorado high country although it was supposed to be in Oklahoma. All in all, it was quite a movie for 1969. I recall the big spread in Life Magazine back then. I do not know how anyone could have missed it back then.

Just saw Rocketman and highly recommend it. Rocketman wasn't on my list of movies to see, and had it not been the birthday request of an old and dear friend, I would never had gone to see it. It's been described as a musical fantasy biography of Elton John, and while not entirely inaccurate, that only describes the mechanics of how John's story is depicted. The film is also more than its creative tricks and use of "magic realism". Its depiction of events is largely accurate and unsparing. John's embrace of a wildly self destructive and self loathing life of "sex drugs, and rock and roll" isn't sanitized. Neither he, nor others in his story are romanticized. The film can be hard to watch at points. By the time John checks himself into a sanitarium to get treatment I am thoroughly sick of him being such a whiny narcissistic POS. So, evidently did John, since he decided to present himself in such an unvarnished light.
Performances are uniformly fine as are the production values. Seeing Sunset Blvd circa '60's and '70's brought back some happy memories for me. John's music is at the center. It is the means through which the story is told and the numbers are visually stunning.
Those open to trying something very different from their usual could do much, much worse than see Rocketman.
4.5 out of 5. Could have used a bit of trimming.

During Elton John's "heyday", a friend of mine kept winning tickets to see him from a local Bay Area radio station, so I've seen him live more times than I really cared to. I liked his first album, but if I made a chart over the years, his output, IMHO, would be on a downward track. YMMV.
I have not seen the film, and do not care to.

I am delighted to learn there is a movie depicting the unvarnished truth of Elton John's life. However, I am absolutely up to my gizzards in narcissistic artists and musicians. Since I manage a non-profit corp for a group of them. I would not spend one moment of time more watching a movie about another one. I certainly enjoyed Elton's early works and let it rest there.

I saw Elton John during his Ice on Fire tour in 1986. He put on a great show. I like all of his music, early and late.
I watched My Man Godfrey (1936), starring a pipe smoking William Powell, last night. Great movie, although Carole Lombard's performance was a bit over the top.

I watched My Man Godfrey (1936), starring a pipe smoking William Powell, last night. Great movie, although Carole Lombard's performance was a bit over the top. She had a highly theatrical style of acting in those comedies even though she did not have much stage time before making movies. "The Twentieth Century", 1934, is another example. I enjoyed her and am sorry she went too early.
