The original "Red Dawn". What a classic! I like John Milius' movies. My favorite is "Rough Riders". If you have not seen it, get it on DVD or streaming. I was never impressed by Tom Berenger until this movie. His portrayal of Teddy Roosevelt is wonderful. Sam Elliot does his usual good job. Leonard Wood is great! Oh, wait, That is not really General Leonard Wood but the actor Dale Dye, who might as well be General Wood. Gary Busey has a great time as General Fighting Joe Wheeler. He is nothing like the real Fighting Joe but still a hoot in this movie. The movie is packed with great performances. Lots of action with Winchester Model 1895 carbines.

Sounds like I need to see Green Book.
It's admirable hearing you fellas work to change. My own dear grandfather is making efforts as well. I never judged him. When you spend your formative years with a mean drunken father who hates the world like his dad did- That's likely who he was to become. I'm proud of him.
Also looking forward to the new QT.

Ive seen it many many times, we've owned it for years. One of the family's favorites. It was the best acting job I've ever seen from Berenger, and Gary Busey just stole the whole show and ran off with it. I love me some Gary Busey.

" It was the best acting job I've ever seen from Berenger,"
That's a bold statement. Better than Berenger as Barnes in Platoon?
And yeah. Busey is a wildcard.

Fighting Joe Wheeler would clock Busey if he saw the movie but his performance was still great. Wheeler's career did not end in Cuba. He went on the command troops during the Philippine Insurgency. He must have been well into his 70s. While on a long march through the jungle, one of his young troopers was overcome by the heat and humidity. General Joe dismounted and marched along side that young man carrying his pack and rifle for him.

If you did not know Berenger was playing Roosevelt, you might swear Teddy had returned from the dead. There is nothing in that performance indicating Tom Berenger is playing a character.I could not even recognize him!

Continuing my revisit of all the old Westerns and last night was "Singing Guns" (1950)
Classic bad guy turned to good guy story with a couple twists ... pretty good!

Recently watched "The Quiet Man" (1952) again. Still delightful. Someone once asked Orson Welles which movie Director's film's did he enjoy watching? Welles replied, "The Old Masters... John Ford." Ford's movies can be savored again and again. There is so much nuance packed in waiting to be noticed. Naturally, a movie about Ireland is going to be excellent. Much of the credit goes to Ford's writers. Still, I am not sure they would have done so well if they worked for a lesser man. Ford must have been inspiring and intimidating.

Is that a Tim Holt Horse Opera? It is an odd duck and starred the then (1950) popular MOR vocalist Vaughn Monroe, with Walter Brennan and Ward Bond in support.

Recently watched "The Quiet Man" (1952) again. Still delightful. I love The Quiet Man. We saw it in the theater last year and it was a disappointing print. So I bought the "special edition remastered $$$ Blu-ray and it's about the same. I would love to see them do a full digital restoration on it. Colors are very dark and muddy. I have seen Ireland and it doesn't look like that.

Is that a Tim Holt Horse Opera? Only a couple of musical numbers that were fairly short which is how I like them. Shows that burst into song every other scene sort of wear on me after awhile. Vaughn Monroe plays the lead with Walter Brennan as the doc / preacher.

I thought it was very moving. Particularly the Queen and the stag in Scotland. Yes, that was one of highlights. There were a lot of parts when I kept reminding her that she was the F'n Queen of England! It wasn't natural. The guy who played Blair was excellent. She is a great actress, so I blame the director. The part where she got out of the truck and walked away from Charles was like her. I admire Elizabeth Rex and I've been studying her for years. She's a very interesting person.

THe guy who played Tony Blair out Blaired the original. LOL! Yes, she is a remarkable woman. From her war years on. Truly up to the position she was called upon to fill. I also like her kids and am sorry Charles will never be king. He would have been a good one.

I watched Burt Lancaster, Telly Savalas, Shelly Winters and Ossie Davis in "The Scalp Hunters" again the other night. Another one of my favorites that I hadn't seen in several years. Burt Lancaster and Telly Savalas were both forces of nature, and it always came across clear on the big screen.

In regard to the Irish/Troubles thread in TV, 1993, In the Name of the Father - Daniel Day Lewis in an inspired lead performance and Pete Postlewaite in fine support. It is a film of merit and highly recommended.

Ossie Davis is one of my favorite actors. Here is man who was much loved but still did not receive the recognition he deserved.
