As the title says, it was brutal here today. Temps @ or near 100 F and heat index over 110 !
So Nick, my younger son, and I loaded up and headed out to see what antique shop finds we could find.
The first couple were granny antique shops, full of china, crystal and watercolor artwork. Not what we were lookin for.
The third place was a neat old Victorian house up in Carthage. Not a great selection, but good enough.
I shared with the shop owner that I was looking for tobaciana related things. I then had to tell her what tobaciana was.
She took me over to a shelf that had lots of ash trays and several pipe rests and a three pipe stand. All Decatur, beautiful wood and nicely made.
I picked up 5 individual pipe rests and a the three pipe stand for $20, down from the original $75 she was asking for them.
As you can see, I decided to use them to showcase my favorite pipe shape.... Bent Bulldogs.
I picked p the Prince Albert can (empty) and the Velvet can (unopened) for $10 @ the next shop we went to.
We were heading out of town and saw a small tobacco shop in a strip mall. Went inside and picked up a box of Carter Hall, Prince Albert and Middleton's Cherry all for $2.79 each. (cheaper than I've found em online)
Nick found a neat Pewter Stein @ the Victorian shop. It had been marked down from $89 to $20. He asked me if $20 was a good deal. I told him to offer $10. He told me that he thought that was too low and she'd never take it.
Just then she walked up and asked if Nick wanted to buy it? I chimed in "yeah, but we're really thinkin that $10 was the number for it. Without missin a beat she said "sure, I'll take $10" (I think I should have offered $5 )
She even threw in an ice cream cone for Nick, she had an ice cream parlor in her shop.
We got home, put the pipes in their stands and each sampled a bowl of the Prince Albert and the Middleton's, being as neither one of us had ever tried em.
Great smokin blends, especially for the price, and no tongue bite whatsoever.
So, all in, between the both of us the tap today came to $50.
All in all a great day with my Pipe Pal Nick.
Gotta tell ya, I love life's simple pleasures.
