Not sure what's gotten into me, but have decided to try to write (and I use that term loosely) some reviews, 2 in days....oh well there's worse things I could be doing.
A classic flake tobacco. This was my introduction to VA Flake. I find the blend is medium in all areas and very enjoyable. Some say there's perique and maybe there is some, but if it's there, it has a role I don't pick up on. What is front and center is the grassy/citrus flavors that is very pleasant. I smoke this year round. I find it is a refreshing smoke especially during the warmer weather. For me, it smokes best in a couple of my billiards. VA Flake is one of the few tobaccos I have pipes specifically dedicated for. It doesn't matter if I fold and stuff or rub it out, it provides and enjoyable pleasant smoke. On my scale, it is certainly a "cellar it" tobacco and I have.

A firm favourite and I have cellared a good few tins as well.

I also find it to be worth aging, but very much an excellent and mild smoke right out of the tin.

That stuff can be had as a pouch blend outside the USA... From Jimbo: www.tobaccoreviews.com/blend/828/orlik-tobacco-company-a-s-golden-sliced-red-tinSeems to be the general consensus with that blend, still I love the stuff, probably have 20 of the 100 gram tins aging away. Prior to the West Coast pipe show I am going to get ahold of Mark Ryan and see if he has any of his 15 year old Perique on hand and can bring it so I can do some doctoring.

Good review. OGS is one of the first VAs I tried over a year ago and I did not like it. I need to revisit it now that my technique had improved.

Nice review ... sounds like you would enjoy Dunhill Flake as well.

Nice review ... one of my favorites and my local 'cigarette outlet' has some for $11.99 a tin.

Thanks! I do like Dunhill Flake. I like it better than OGS actually and on my list to review. (Spoiler alert OGS got 3 stars, Dunhill will get 4)

Good review. OGS is one of the first VAs I tried over a year ago and I did not like it. I need to revisit it now that my technique had improved. Me, too. I enjoyed a very old Dunhill Light Flake sample, but on the rare occasion I smoke straight VAs I'd go for something darker like FVF or a McClelland. I should try it again. Maybe it's partly technique, or just the evolution of tastes over time.

I think they just wave the pallet of tins over a barrel of Perique. I dont detect any Perique in OGS.

I haven't had OGS in years. It's highly rated and has some diehard fans. Personally, I would avoid it as the bright VA's tend to not agree with me, I lean toward the darker variety (Royal Yacht, FVF). Even though I wouldn't buy it, I would try it if someone at pipe club had a tin.

I have only tried a sample FVF but have some in cellar and liked it from what I recall so ordered some and has just reached 1 year of age so that is on my list to bring out soon. Royal Yacht as I mentioned in another thread will be the next "New To me" Blend I try.

Bite-wise or in some other way? @chico, Bite-wise. The brights and reds tend to bother my tongue... though not always the case if just a component in a blend.

Fans of OGS will also probably like Peter Heinrich's Golden Sliced.

I have a tin I am looking forward to trying, but I already have no space for more jars. I hope it will still be good after a couple more years in the tin.

Nice review. Definitely a blend that lived up to it's reputation, in my opinion.

Fans of OGS will also probably like Peter Heinrich's Golden Sliced. And Peter Stokkebye Luxury Navy Flake. Orlik Golden Sliced is a favorite of mine. It's a great staple pipe tobacco of bright Virginias and a very tiny 1% pinch or so of Perique to my tastes. If you add just the tiniest pinch of extra Perique, literally just a two finger pinch with thumb and pointer finger to a few bowls worth, it's so excellent.

I tried a sample two weeks ago and my mouth tasted like I just cut grass in 100 degree sun baked yard. My mouth felt thick and swollen and started to burn. This is why I have stayed away from VA only flakes for years.
