It seems like nowadays, you can't even go to a smoke shop, and find pouches and /or tins of pipe tobacco anymore. Their walls are lined with bag after bag after bag of Bulk Pipe Tobaccos. Are there really any good ones out there that would prompt you to spring for a big bag of this stuff? I'm not speaking of the brand name tobaccos that are sold in bulk, but rather the large bags of tobacco such as Virginia Gold, Cherokee, American Club, Gambler, etc. What Bulk Tobaccos, if any, would you recommend?

Pretty much all of those are cigarette tobacco relabeled for sale as pipe tobacco to get around the taxes. Some of them might be okay in a pipe, but better in a roll-up or tube. I had some Good Stuff Red leftover from making my own cigs & would smoke it in a MM Legend, but it wasn't the greatest smoke. Editted to add: Some work okay as a base for a mix, but need a little hydration. About the only bagged up stuff I'd see people like on it's own was Smokers Pride Rich Taste & the like.

That is my general opinion of them, but hoping that some of the other members may have something different to say.

I have stayed away from those tobaccos because I just don't know what they are.Smokers pride is one that I have smoked some of.At about $18 for a 12 bag it's not expensive compared to most tobacco. In this case though I think you get what you pay for.

Super Value, Smoker's Pride and Daughters & Ryan blends. I've smoked most of them. Tell you what you want in terms of taste and I can give you a few suggestions.

Perhaps some reviews would be in order.

Lots of them are reviewed at TR. I've considered them all cigarette tobaccos and don't smoke them, though I'm considering trying one or two of the Smoker's Pride blends, like Rich Taste.

I don't consider Smoker's Pride or Super Value blends to be cigarette tobacco. The SP Rich Taste and the Mellow Taste are pretty decent work and play smokes at a good price. The SP Rum and Whisky have a nice flavor.

I do my best to gauge blends as objectively as possible, regardless of who made them or their "standing" in the pipe smoking community. I learned from my time in the comic book world that every character is somebody's favorite and I would say the same is true of tobacco blends. All companies make something of merit and also do the converse to one degree or another. Why knock something I don't care for when I know it fits somebody's personal preference? Looking askance at a product because of the company who made it is unproductive. I never cared for tobacco snobs, or snobs of any kind. If you're happy, you're happy. It's be like telling people what you think they should eat. Who cares if they enjoy food that you don't? So, the only way to know what a blend is like when reviewing is it take an objective point of view. People can decide for themselves whether they want to try it or not. If anything I say helps one way or another, it's all for the good.

Interestingly enough, to me anyway, I'm sittin here readin this thread while enjoying SP Black Cavendish. A pleasant easy smoke. Not a "blow your mind fantastic smoke" like many of the blends out there, but it doesn't disappoint.
Other Bulk's out there that are worth a try...
Sutliff Peach Cobbler. Yeah, I know, it's an Aro, but it is an incredibly enjoyable and fulfilling experience.
Altadis and Sutliff MM 965. What can I say. I love any MM965 I can get hold of.

Both companies make different blends for different markets, but they use the same quality of tobaccos and toppings for their respective lines.

...No...however, I believe some of them are on par with the more traditional Lane and Sutliff pipe tobaccos...

The Criss Cross brand is not to bad and they have been around long before the tax hike. The red bag has a hint of vanilla added to the blend. For the most part if can hang on a peg hook stay away.

when I started smoking pipe, I stuck mostly to PA and CB regular. once and a while I'd get something in black cherry since my wife liked the smell. every once and a while I'd get one of Smoker's Pride variants. I've been meaning to get their Rum for blending. I do like their Black Cavendish mixed in with some Latakia blends.

I like the Daughters and Ryan Rimboche series, particularly the SJ with the St. James Perique.
Also the Smoker's Pride line are good, particularly the black cavendish.

Some don't even look renamed. I have two bulk blends in the Aro's that I would buy in bulk, or have done so. Tinder Box's Captain Spice tastes just enough different than all the Black Cavs I have tried that were I there I would buy more bulk. However, their online prices are too crazy. Shipping even crazier. The other blend is H&H Vermont Meat Pie. Russ's blends are a little high for bulk, but I love the savory aspect of this. Were I to have a smoke before a holiday feast this toby would be the one that sets my taste buds up. I have a bulk order of this in my shopping cart waiting for another credit card company stupid enough to raise my limit.

Wanted to put this in a separate post:
I am looking for a bulk cherry that blasts cherry. Drugstore Blends offer a definite cherry taste, but are actually more expensive than others. Problem: Some of the Sutliffs, Lanes, Stokkebyes promise cherry but I don't get it. I am sure they have some that have what I want, but I have not found the needle in that haystack yet.
