Edward G. Robinson smoked EGR, but also Dunhill blends.
Albert Einstein smoked Revelation.
Stalin smoked Edgeworth Ready Rubbed.
Gerald Ford smoked Field & Stream at some point, but from 1974 on, he smoked Edgeworth Ready Rubbed. I learned this in Thomas DeFrank's bio of Ford. DeFrank is a former Newsweek reporter who became personal friends with while covering his career, and in his book "Write It When I'm Gone", DeFrank goes out of his way to mention that Ford's tobacco of choice was ERR. He mentioned Ford smoking quite often, which gave me the impression that Ford smoked quite a bit.
I've seen a couple of photos of Nixon and John F. Kennedy smoking a pipe. I wish I knew what they smoked.
I've seen photos of Ronald Reagan and Humphrey Bogart with a pipe. I always wondered if those were staged. We know Bogart was a constant cigarette smoker.
Basil Rathbone smoked what is now known as Pipeworks & Wilke's #515.
William Conrad smoked a lot of Dunhill blends, but apparently settled on Amphora Full Aroma.
Bing Crosby smoked Hayward Mixture. I don't believe the story that he smoked Crooner.
Hugh Hefner is known for smoking Mixture #79, but his right hand man (who had started working for Hef in 1960) told me in 2003 that Hefner preferred Sail Yellow, and smoked mainly for show.
Groucho Marx lent his name to ERR ads, but his son said Groucho smoked a Dunhill blend, though he never specified which one.
I'll let someone else add the who smoked which Kramer's blends.

Great post, Jim. I'll take the bait on Kramer's. I think Danny Kaye smoked "Blend for Cary Grant." That's all I got.

I want to know what Rodger Radcliff smoked. My guess is Three Nuns.
Great post. I love lists of cool information like this.

I read somewhere that C.S. Lewis smoked 3 Nuns, among other blends, and that historian/novelist Shelby Foote smoked a mixture of Sutliff Edward G. Robinson and Half & Half (which I have tried to duplicate), although reportedly he changed the mix and/or added to it over the years. His friend Wm. Faulkner, I also read, smoked Blue Boar, also among others.

In a thread about OTC blends elsewhere on this forum is a picture of a pouch of Middleton Apple bearing a sticker that says Marine One and Richard Nixon on it. One can draw their own conclusions.

Seeing as I'm about 1/2 way through the first book of his Civil War Trilogy, and reading your review of the Barking Dog match, I may have to mix some of this up. Thanks for the info!

Kramer's site (probably not news) has a pretty good list of who smoked what.
Bogart did smoke a pipe. FDR was photographed with a pipe in the early years before POTUS.
Francis Albert smoked Mixture 79. He is photographed with a pipe on the cover of an LP, I believe.
Wish I knew what Burl smoked.

I've been trying to remember who it was for days, but there was a celebrity who smoked Happy Brown Bogie but I can't remember for the life of me who it was. I believe it was an American actor. The others already mentioned pretty well covers the only ones I know of, other than Mark Twain smoked a blend that I also can't remember the name to it. I know, a lot of info I added! The blend has been gone over 100 years anyway.

I have read that Gerald Ford smoked Edgeworth but also cadged tobacco from anyone else around him. Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House is one of the most pipe centric movies ever. I read that the tin in the office seen with Melvin Douglas and Cary Grant was a Dunhill blend but I can't remember what it was. It was something I'm not familiar with so it coud have been a custom bend.

I have been meaning to make a list of these. Thus far I have only tried the Capstan 'blue' and the Three Nuns a la Tolkien and Lewis. When it is back in, I'd like to give Epiphany a try. And of course I should be receiving my Edward G. Robinson(hopefully tomorrow) A treasured blend of at least two famous pipe smokers.

Epiphany you really gotta give it quite a few bowls before it seems to make sense. Many people hate it after only a bowl or two, and I admit the first few bowls I found myself thinking it had some pretty rough edges and could be harsh. Definitely does best in a cob or maybe an already seasoned English pipe. the Edward G Robinson is a really solid all day smoke.

This guy in these videos isn't very bright nor is he very informed. He doesn't know that House of Windsor didn't make Field & Stream when President Ford smoked it or that it is documented that Ford smoked Edgeworth Ready Rubbed from at least 1974 on, and likely even earlier than that. He doesn't know anything about Bing Crosby smoking Hayward Mixture nor that the claim Crosby smoked Crooner is in doubt. And there was no C&D company in Crosby's day. Not sure he's right about Stalin's smoke either; reports vary on what he smoked. There's absolutely no proof Bogart smoked G&H Brown Bogie. Somebody on a Pipes Magazine thread was just guessing because of the name of the tobacco has "Bogie" in it, and his guy just took it as gospel. There's no other source for that assertion. There may be other errors, but I gave up watching after that because he's dull and not very knowledgeable on the subject.

Yeah, he doesn't seem to be the type that would be first in line at the IQ contest. No idea about the validity of his claims. That being said, he seems to be a genuine and personable guy and I watch a lot of his stuff just because he seems to be a good guy. I remembered these videos and thought I'd share. Another voice to the cacophony I guess.

Re: Der Bingle - We do know about Hayward, but he smoked a pipe for a long time. I don't doubt that he had tobacconists in the town he was honorary mayor, Elko, NV, Hollywood, and New York. One of them possibly mixed Deer Tongue in a Toby and hooked him. Elko was a small enough town, BTW, where a small shop owner might have added his secret ingredient to a blend. Deer Tongue. Didn't Huck Finn smoke Corn Silk? It would be totally cool to know all the varieties, but, like JimInks states, Hayward is the only verified one.

In 1945, a friend of mine who is a giant Bing fan was on leave of duty from the Sea Bees in Hollywood. He saw Bing go into a pipe shop, and the man at the counter handed him a pouch of an undetermined (by my friend) blend, which Bing purchased. Doesn't sound like a custom blend to me. Also, when you see Bing light up in the movies, he does it with great ease, something not usually done if he was smoking a cube cut, which Crooner had been for years. I just don't believe the Crooner story, unless somebody made a blend as a gift to Bing at some point in his later life. That's possible and perhaps more was made of the story than reality would dictate. I did attempt to contact the Crosby family at their website about this subject, but I never received an answer.
