Paraphrased from a recent pipesmagazine podcast:
"I crack a tin and put it in a jar for a few weeks and something about the fresh oxygen hitting it results in quite an improvement in the product"
I have jarred a few open tins just to make sure that they didn't succumb to the low moisture sonoran desert, but I cannot say that it has resulted in any improvements because I tend to smoke them up quickly.
What blends have improved for you by doing the same?
Crack a tin as soon as you get it and jar it, or age it in the tin and jar it for a few weeks before smoking?
(I know that some will say that if it is C&D they crack the tin immediately to jar it, but for the sake of the conversation, i am looking for blends that improve by jarring be it a week or years.)

Maybe a Mixture 79 where it increases anise flavor in jarred atmosphere

A few weeks of either popping the lid occasionally and/or dumping it out into a larger jar seems to help certain blends.
For me, any McClelland Virginia gets this treatment as does anything else that arrives very moist.

I'd saying opening a tin for several weeks and opening it several times a week always does the same thing. For true age, there is a difference in blends like Escudo that were immediately put into mason jars and sealed for over 5 years, compared to the sealed tin kept for 5 years. Taste differences.

I am guessing that jarring and aging the tinned Escudo suits you better?

I just have a stack of sealed tins and one open tin jarred currently, so I don't really adhere to it as a policy. Just stating you will notice a difference in a tobacco that ages well from aged sealed tin to aged sealed jar. I believe it's letting that oxygen space in the jar after you open the tin and move to jar. It's not big enough that it's make or break. For example, I opened a tin of 1999 A&C Peterson's Escudo last fall and it aged fantastically just fine in the tin, and the tin was still sealed really well.

I best let sleeping dogs lie then. I hate to think of buying more mason jars, and should the wife shove me in front of a speeding bus, she could probably get more money from aged tinned tobacco.

Good to hear ... just acquired several tins of the A&C version from 2004.
However, for this discussion I'm not really talking aging ... just breathing for awhile prior to smoking it.

Yes, agreed. Opening a tin for several weeks and letting it breath and not being sealed, makes the blend better.

It makes a lot of sense with the wetter tobaccos, as you can exercise more control on getting the moisture level right...typically I nuke a couple flakes in the microwave for 10 seconds...love that aroma, but that isn't always convenient when away from home or the breakroom at work. I once opened a tin of Balkan Flake intending to leave it open for 45 minutes, got distracted, called away and it sat out for a couple days before I got back to it. I hate bringing leaf back from the grave it is never the same.
It is pretty funny nuking some flakes in the Love's truck stop microwave and seeing expressions...one guy was giving me some funky arse looks, I told him "It's all right, I have the medical card for it, I usually put it in brownies though". I was kinda hoping he would call the cops.

Probably a whole bunch but there are only three of which I'm positive:
1. Sam Gawith Best Brown Flake 2. Rattray Marlin Flake 3. Mac Baren Va #1
No particular order, just know taking these out of the tin and giving them a little jar time improves the smoking experience.
