I started smoking a pipe on and off almost 10 years ago. I started off with Prince Albert and Captain Black. it's only been the last 3 years or so that I've been exploring different blends, which I find to be like craft beer. There are a bazillion varieties out there to be had. Some are great, some are good, and some are neither. While I enjoy VA/Pers, English, plugs, and twists, I still have a soft spot for that old favorite: Prince Albert. Same as I still have a soft spot for Arrogant Bastard Ale, one of the first real craft beers I had.
So, what blend did you start with? Do you still smoke it?

Most of the drug store brands like Middleton's. I was 18 and going into a tobacco store was intimidating. I finally ventured in and bought some bulk tobacco that turned out to be Lane 1Q. Mostly stuck with Sugar Barrel, Captain Black ...

I first started when I was 15 with a pipe from the hardware store... Yup, the hardware store. I smoked Argosy Black mostly. I remember getting some tobacco named after Old Grandad whiskey at one point.

An aromatic from the shop I bought my first pipe at back in 1980. A peach blend if I recall. Always aromatics when I first started. Now maybe one pipe out of 20 is an aromatic.

April 2015 is when I first smoked a pipe. A pouch of Captain Black Royal and Cherry bought at a "Tobacco Store" i.e discount cigarette store. Smoked the Royal first, then tried the cherry. The Royal is long gone, I still have the Cherry pouch less 2 bowls, but will never be smoked by me, not sure it even worth sending to someone to try, it certainly hasn't dried out being open in the pouch for over 2 years.....

Was 15 when I started. I kept trying different tins, Sail, Flying Dutchman, Amphora, M79, Midd Cherry, before settling in, late 70's on Tinderbox's Captain Spice, Lamplighter, and Philosopher. Another shop had some match blends I would buy as I liked his shop better.

Sir Walter Raleigh. My dad smoked it, so I started out with it.

Way back in high school it was Captain Black. When I picked up the pipe years later it was 1Q.

Started at 14 with something we call down here in the south "rabbit tobacco". Never was quite sure what it really was.

Lane 1Q was my 1st pipe tobacco, at first I was mixing it with my cig tobacco in tubes. Then I bought a MM Legend from Walgreens, the pipe journey began & the cigs went bye bye.
I still smoke 1Q, but not as much since I started to enjoy Va, Va/Pers & dark fired Kentucky blends.

I started out with Borkum Riff Bourbon Whiskey. Tried all the BK blends at the tine, was not satisfied with any of them, so I branched out to other companies' blends. A lot of them. For a short time, I was smoking Skandinavik Regular until I found the Amphoras, and quickly settled on the Original. Then, I smoked a bunch of Tinderbox blends (repacked Lane and Stokebye products), had a personal blend made for me that I smoked for over thirty years (two-thirds Anniversary Cherry, one third latakia), and still experimented with other blends. When I started smoking Three Nuns (1982) and Balkan Sobranie (early'80s), it was hard to go back to most of that stuff, though I did smoke Dunhill English bulks.

I started with lane 1Q. When I bought my first pipe, a Brebbia gala 986, my tobacconist put the paladin black cherry back on the shelf and and said he cant let me start with "Candy Tobacco" since I was buying a decent pipe to start my pipe smoking journey. He said many people start with this blend and it most likely will not turn me off of pipe tobacco and he was right.. I still smoke it and enjoy it usually in the fall outside with my wife on the porch.

Some cherry blend that was horrible. I finally went to a real pipe shop and the owner taught me a lot and moved me to Dunhill MM965 pretty quickly.

...first tobaccos in 1960 were Prince Albert, SWR, Granger, Mixture #79 & Carter Hall...a friend of my family travelled to Europe monthly and in '62 began my long affair with Lakelands and Matured Virginias...Oh what memories!

A vanilla flavored black Cavendish that was in the jar at the store. I ended up mixing in a bit of vanilla flavored yellow Virginia too. Smoked that for a while, but not anymore.

All of the Borkum Riffs Was so thankful to find Sturk's Tobacconist after that; their house blends opened a new world to me and through them I met Samuel Gawith ....the rest is history.

Mixture #79 believe it or not and didn't understand why anyone would smoke the stuff. Now I enjoy War Horse Green which if you don't know is a Licorice and Anise flavored blend but, the ONLY aro I smoke.

What were your initial reactions to Lakelands? Dunhill...then Compton Mackenzie's "Sublime Tobacco"...which continued to fuel my passion...so, a rather unique experience for a young piper!

I had a friend from Ireland send me some Condor about 15 years ago along with a half dozen pipes and some other tobaccos, all but 2 pipes I was able to smoke because of ghosting and the Condor was discarded right after trying it.

Borkum Riff and Captain Black in 1972 when I first started smoking a pipe but tried a few of the OTCs like Carter Hall, Middleston's Cherry and even Mixture 79. I was about to just quit when I found out about tobacconists.
