This Sunday, "Endeavour" returns to Masterpiece Mystery on PBS with the third season..
This has been an outstanding detective series based upon the famous "Inspector Morse" series from the BBC in the 1980s. A prequel set in the early and mid 1960s when Morse drops out of Oxford to become a Detective Constable assigned to his town of Oxford. Shaun Evans does an outstanding job as the young Endeavour Morse (that is his first name). Although from a humble northern England background, his intelligence and classical education puts him both at odds with his colleagues in the police and ahead of the curve in crime solving. The series is a polemic on the erosion of class distinctions and the rise of young man through merit. He has his challenges with his fellow coppers and the public who believe policemen to be dull plodders. Aptly supported by Roger Allam has his supervisor- Inspector Thursday, a real cop's cop and the excellent Anton Lesser as the fussbudget Chief Superintendent of the Oxford Police.
As with most of British TV series set in the their past, excellent attention to detail of the period. I almost wet myself watching the police in their Jaguar Mark II sedans and Rovers. There is the occasional vintage motorbike. The women take me back with their clothes and hairstyles. Not many guns, of course, as this England in the unarmed days. However, when called for, they break out some great stuff- Webleys, SMLEs.
Worth a watch. You might want to start from the beginning.Netflix has the DVDs.

Great show and you're right about the British mysteries. They are done very well.

One of my favorites and will be watching. Inspector Thursday always has a smart looking billiard he fiddles with.

Thanks for the update. Have watched since its beginning. A far more successful addition to the Morse cannon, than Lewis.

The season wrapped up last night with some loose ends neatly tied and another thread unraveled. Where goes our Detective now? A just reward for Inspector Thursday, his good lady wife and DC Morse.
Four episodes seem a short season but it is what it is. Sorry to wait an entire year for the fifth season. Guess I will have to find something else to do!

Sounds like a winner to me! Hmmmm maybe tivo it! Hopefully TIVO can start with Season I, Episode I and go on from there. This series builds upon itself. Perhaps most of them do. If you have nostalgia for England of the 1960s, this series is for you. Even if not, it still works well. For me Endeavour Morse is the kind of guy many of us wanted to be like back then; cool, detached, educated and intelligent, a independent loner and outsider. This series brings back floods of memories. As a car buff, just seeing those cars makes causes me to break out in a sweat. The Mark II Jaguar is my all time favorite sedan. The Rover P6 being a close second. We owned one of those Rovers back then but never could quite swing a Jag.

Well, being British and having been born in Manchester in the north in 1964, I guess I can say I know England in the sixties pretty well. I read someone comparing an American detective show with an English detective show and it went like this: American detective: I solved the crime by shooting fifteen people and blowing shite the hell up! British detective: I solved the crime by noticing that special umbrella! That said, I also love the Mk II Jag. It's one of the cars I get to race in my favorite racing computer game, GT Legends. It's vintage racing on real tracks, like Sears Point, Laguna Seca and Road Atlanta. Here's the lowdown on the Mk II:

FYI, 1300 kg is 2866 lbs, and 333 NM (newton meters) of torque is 246 ft lbs. FYI

Endeavor is a fine production. This show has legs and could enjoy a long run. A worthy entry in the Morse cannon. I noticed in the 4th episode credits, that John Thaw's wife and daughter were cast members.

It may have had triple SUs, high compression and ran best on high octane gas. The suspension was tuned so it did not roll as much as the stock model. Laycock de Normanville Electric Overdrive. Sometimes we would be cruising at 65 and he would suddenly notice he was still in 3rd gear. The car was so smooth with that double overhead cam I-6 it was hard to notice. Nice comfy leather seats and burl walnut dash. Banjo wheel, of course.

I did not know they had DOHCs. Not bad for a fifties car. Take that Honda! Banjo wheel; awesome. Here's a sweet pic of the 53 TR-3A archy's dad restored and had for sale at I think $23,000. Not fast, but cool as hell

Not fast, but cool as hell 60s car. My uncle drove a TR-3 in the late 1950s and early 1960s. He thought the MGA was faster but the Triumph handled better. That was his opinion anyway. Yes, a very cool car.

Well, I'm kinda hijacking a thread that's supposed to be about a British detective show by putting up pics of old British cars, but the OP tosh is replying, so I'm not going to feel too bad, I guess. Sorry tosh. And now you know why I drive a dark green over tan leather 99 Miata - the British roadster perfected by the Japs. No, it has none of the cool factor of an MG or Triumph, but it's a pure racecar, and you don't need to take a scrap of cardboard to park it in your buddy's driveway, if you take my meaning

The Japanese produced some great ones for which they received little recognition. This 1967 Datsun 2000 being one.

Yeah, a Japanese car with a cool factor. You gotta add the 280Z and the RX7 to the mix. Maybe the MR2 also. I went to high school with a guy that was kinda crazy, and decided to sell cocaine for a summer. His drug dealer guy loaned him a black supercharged MR2. He and his girlfriend would drive out to the dealer's mansion in California at 100mph, where they'd stay for a week, and it was anything you wanted, you got. They'd drive back at 55. When his hair started to fall out, he decided to give it up, and the dealer didn't kill him, but took back the MR2. The cops raided his apartment two weeks later. They tortured him a bit, and smashed all his possessions, but because there was no longer anything to find, found nothing and left. He ended with nothing. Bright move, Robert. I wouldn't mind having a 2nd Gen RX7, but the Miata is such a pure racecar, I think I'm done for life
