I have not seen any news video footage of amphibians being used for rescue. With the water and high spots of exposed ground, something like the old DUKW seems to be what is needed. Does the Texas Army Guard have anything like this?

I have 4 sisters and their families in the Beaumont/Orange, Texas area and they have all been hit with flood waters in areas that have never flooded before. The only emergency response they are seeing is from local government, volunteers, family and friends. Very little even from the state as the federal and state agencies are concentrating on Houston. Don't look for any coverage of these areas outside of local media either.
Reminds me of Hurricane Katrina when all the coverage and the "massive" rescue efforts were in New Orleans but nothing much was done for the communities east of New Orleans to Alabama .

In addition to the Coast Guard, it is reported that 24,000 National Guard troops from Texas and other states have been called up.

Watching rescues in Port Arthur, you guessed it good ol boys to rescue. If this storm is tracking your way get out. Not trying to be mean or a SA just pack your bags get in the car and head north out of its way. I don't care how many storms you have been through, I don't care how many times you have not flooded. If your kin folk live down there call them and tell them get out. The devastation is heart breaking stuff can be replaced, life not so much.

I don't know what is more interesting the DHS and FEMA are functioning they way they are supposed to or that Wall Street Journal published that article.

I don't know what is more interesting the DHS and FEMA are functioning they way they are supposed to or that Wall Street Journal published that article. As you will see at the end of that article, this guy wrote a book chronicling the governments failure in dealing with disasters. He has been critical of past administrations regardless of party. In preparation they had 6,800 people along with assets staged prior to the hurricane landing. Had they not done so, after the fact they wouldn't have access to the areas they predeployed in. Considering the magnitude of the storm and judging it all on how past disasters played out, I would have to say it is better than the past. Comparing the governmental action by Texas compared to Louisiana, it is obvious that the adults are in charge in Texas.

For the most part Texas government officials operate in the best interest of Texas and its residents - regardless of political party. Not like Louisiana and the City of New Orleans which caters to what their political party and special interest groups want.

Twenty independent trucks were seen pulling portable beds that are set up in a semi trailer box van. Each truck proudly displayed a small sign made from copy paper that said FEMA. Because water was not released from reservoirs and local dams in the Houston before the rainfall began, Thousands of homes were flooded. My bathtub may overflow should I A. Remove the plug to prevent flooding or B. Let the tub overflow then pull the plug. Thousands of people are trapped in their houses in danger of being drowned should I A. Wait until the water recedes to send help or B. Let the locals rescue everyone in fishing boats and take the credit for it. Thousands of people need fresh water, food and medical attention should I A. wait until the water recedes to start moving equipment and supplies or B. Let the local folks work that out and take the credit. Thousands of people are at risk of being flooded with no means of escape should I A. Tell them to shelter in place until after they are flooded and the roads become impassable then tell them to evacuate. or B. Evacuate the people using counter flow freeways. We have 650 million dollars for city infrastructure should I A. Build a 15 million dollar high school football stadium and spend the rest building bicycle paths and city beautification so we can get the super bowl here. or B. Fix the outdated infrastructure to better control flooding. If you answered the following questions correctly you are not qualified for government work and the job has been given to someone else using affirmative action. YMMV

It saddens me that the "Cajun Navy" travels to Houston and Dickerson to help and wind up being shot at by thugs trying to steal their boats. Apparently that didn't actually happen. If anything they heard a gunshot.

YMMV That was a $125 million dollar high school stadium in Katy. Insane. PS: I remember when your neighborhood was rice fields. Real estate speculators will build anywhere that they can get a permit for. There was no water in the Barker and Addicks reservoirs before the storm. The houses that are flooding to the west of the reservoirs were built 10 feet low than the dam. Houses in this part of the state used to be built with raised foundations. We need to get back to that and be smarter about where we build.

Ron I live up in the mountains off HWY 830 on Lake Conroe elevation 330ft. Currently living between a dumpster and a septic tank. It is better than a Wally World parking lot. Waiting for it dry out so I can back my rig up to the lake were it belongs. Not sure what stinks worse my temporary neighbors, the dumpster or the septic tank. Currently wearing a Pina Colada air freshener around my neck and practicing saying get of my lawn.

The Corp of Engineers just said that Harvey was a once in 25k to 40k year event. No human in the western hemisphere has ever seen rain like this.

Does the Texas Army Guard have anything like this? 9 The Marines landed in Galveston Saturday with tanks, but I haven't seen them being used. They could have been similar to the pics you posted. They have taken a bunch of WW II deuce and a halfs and half tracks out of muse and collections.

I should hope our military still have some kind of amphibious vehicles. Maybe not. Helicopters may have taken over that role.

The last time I saw a DUKW like the one in the picture was 1974 in Point Muwu it was being used in the dolphin training program.

Pappy if you can find fresh milk or powdered you will be a even bigger hero. Nothing will touch your heart deeper than handing a gallon of milk to a mother with young children. P.S I cried after I passed out a case of dried milk earlier this week so bring Kleenex.
