I've been sitting on a few tins and decided after 1 year of age to finally try it. Especially, with at the time of this review, that the Dunhill blends are going away...again. If this does occur and if it turned out I loved the blend I would still have time to cellar some. The cut is the typical Dunhill, a nice ribbon, very easy to pack and moisture content right out of tin was perfect. The tin note reminded me of a cross of Elizabethan Mixture and Early Morning Pipe with a little more fruit like raisin aroma. A little citrusy/grassy and a little spice also is there. Lights very easy. The smoke is medium all around for me, flavor, taste and nicotine. However, the nic hit can a little more than medium, especially on empty stomach, but not unpleasant. The Virginia's come through nicely with a light grassy taste I get more of a raisin and spice flavor in the smoke. It tastes close to how it smells in the tin to me. It is a nice richer type of smoke, but nothing that knocked my socks off frankly. It's good and understand the following. I have 3 tins cellared and will likely not add to it. It certainly is nothing like I have tried so far, so not currently aware of a true match at this time. So if you try it and like you should stock up "just in case". For me it is a good smoke, but at this time I am in the "smoke what I have and not cellar" camp.

This is simultaneously the most underrated and overrated blends. So many people seem to really love it and are devastated that it's going the way of the dodo, and others rag on it like it's M79. I found it a very very ordinary and boring nicotine-delivery method

It's a good blend but prefer EM, EMP and Nightcap over it and am cellared deep on those 3. RY is good just not outstanding to my taste and will smoke what I have with no issue.

If the thought of granulated firestone tires in your pipe appeals to you, they Royal Yacht might be for you. I am an admitted Nic-at-night-nic-fiend, but this stuff is like using as a colonic irrigation option...maybe you made the trip, but I'm not there yet.

I know the topping is supposed to be Plum, but for me everything about this blend from tin note to room note reminded me of that slightly 'wrong' smell grandmother's basement got while she was canning tomatoes. Understand, I love tomatoes- I make my own sauces, bread and fry them green, put them on sandwiches, and eat cherry tomatoes like popcorn, but every now and then you get that bitter one that taste like the smell of hot garbage- That is what Royal Yacht taste like to me. A garbage bag full of slightly under-ripe, peeled tomatoes with some sun-dried tomato, raisin, and dried grass thrown in and sitting in the hot late-morning sun for a few hours with those garbage bees buzzing about... This isn't that bad of a judgement. Some of my favourite blends hold peculiar flavours that seem strange, but I love them. It's all in the smoker's palate. I recommend this blend to anyone who loves smoking pipe tobacco as a novelty they will either love or hate and have fun experiencing either way.

I thought the stuff was pretty good about five years ago, but then again, I never bought more than one tin. I should buy a stack before it's gone just because.

last experience with RY probably 10yrs ago. Outa the tin (see Janitor in a Drum) mention above. Talked a bit to Pipestud. He said don't toss it, just baggie it up, wait 5 yrs. By golly, mellowed out quite a bit. Still one dimension, bland, quality leaf but all long gone & not interested in buying more. Was something different coming from a long time lataholic.

Gotta say I'm one of the fan boys. I really enjoy this tobacco.
I have always described it as a VA that smokes like a Burley. The topping is just a bonus in my opinion and doesn't overpower the flavor of the tobacco.
