My father smoked SWRA for the last few years of his life. He tried others but said he enjoyed SWRA more than any other blend. It doesn't like me. For some reason, it bothers my throat.

Just put a pouch of this on my P&C order after reading through these reviews. After liking Erin Go Bragh (made by the same company) I am hoping I like SWRA as well.
I also think this could be the blend that my uncle smoked that I have been chasing (Erin Go Bragh is awfully close though).

So, got my order in yesterday and fired up a bowl of SWRA on the commute this morning. I am quite impressed. As much as I like 1Q (even though Erin Go Bragh is fighting it for pipe time) and preach it as the quintessential gateway blend to pipe smoking, I think SWRA does just as good of a job in most areas. It is quite refined given its OTC label. Where 1Q delivers a decent core of tobacco notes with a nice topping of vanilla, SWRA gives a more intriguing array of top notes that have you pondering what it actually is. There are zero "artificial" notes in there like some other OTC pouches (I am looking at you borkhum riff bourbon).
The thing about SWRA that really puts it out there the most is that the toppings are so delicately applied that you wonder if they are even additions or if they are natural notes. Unfortunately this is a double edge sword as the core tobacco notes can be a little muted at times. Maybe the fact that they age the tobacco before distribution that melds everything together nicer than others.
It burned a little hot for me and there was a twinge of bite that forced me to really slow it down. The bowl burned pretty fast too, which isn't a problem but something to note. Both of those things could of been due to packing though.
Beard note is a little light for me. I am not left with much of its essence to enjoy throughout the day. Nothing off putting or artificial lingers. I just don't get the lasting enjoyment I get with other blends.
I think SWRA should be "required reading" for new pipers but more importantly it should also be for aromatic blenders as an example of how to lightly apply toppings. I guess I am not a fan of overly topped stuff so take the last statement with a grain of salt.
I was anticipating this one turning into a big can purchase but I am not sure if I am there yet on it. I have a few groupings that I consider my blends for. One grouping is the "everyday, don't let me down, no effort, can smoke it anytime/anywhere" group. This is where 1Q and Erin Go Bragh sit and where I thought SWRA would fit. After one bowl it has that potential but not sure it has made the cut yet. Although it definitely has me excited to try it again and again.

I bought a big tin somewhere, and I plan on tearing into it as my "just want something uncomplicated but good" smoke, but I have set myself a goal of burning through all my samples and trades first.

Been hitting the SWRA quite a bit lately and I believe this is the quintessential core pipe flavor at its best (for me). It is light and doesn’t have complexity but delivers its core notes cleanly and efficiently. Great room note too.
It is the werthers of pipe tobacco. I mean that in flavor profile (not in a cloying way at all) and the fact that your grandpa always had it on him. It does taste like werthers with a light coffee caramel aroma with some leather and earth to round it out.
It is not the most interesting there is and is on the lighter side, but I can’t get enough of it right now.

I get both SWR and SWRA from Tobaccopipes. They had them both in tubs and pouches last time that I looked.

I just smoked some SWRA after all these years. Tastes do change. I really enjoyed it and will be smoking more of it.
