I've always wanted to grow a bonsai. My wife got me a book, but that's as far as I got.
I went to a very cool outdoor Bonsai garden in Spain, too.

Sweet! I've been growing trees in pots for some time. I'm from the northeast and did some intensive training under John Romano. He's a shohin guy, though I like them a bit bigger.

Always liked Bonsai trees. Seems like an interesting and relaxing hobby, though I wonder if I would have the patience.

Longwood Gardens, an old Du Pont family estate south west of Philadelphia, is an amazing place. They also have an incredible bonsai display with some of the trees over 100 years old. longwoodgardens.org/gardens/bonsai-display

Interesting that you mention Longwood, John. I just got a call from my Mother. She is coming to visit the first week in December and has secured us tickets for a Christmas concert at Longwood.
I have been in Philly for 5 years and never have been. Looking forward to it.

I bought a small stunted double trunk live oak, planted it in yard and have been trimming it to stay about 5 ft tall, it's a cute thing, Blue Birds love it.

Years ago when I visited the Biltmore estate in Asheville, they also had an impressive bunch of bonsai plants in the arboretum.

I bought 2 ficus bonsai last Mother's Day. It's been a fun year with them so far. They lived on the back patio all summer. Now one is in the dining room and the other is on my dresser in the bedroom. I sweet talked the nursery owner out of two 10 year old displays so they were already trained. Though I have had to give the one a bit of attention. I love them. As soon as I have time I'm going to drive to the South side of the City and get a Fukien Tea tree to add to the heard.
No juniper bonsai for me....I'm allergic.

Ficus will need as much light as possible so I don't know about the dresser. Back to the patio when it's consistantly above 40. Might want to look into at least a cheap florescent lamps when wintering. Good luck.

Beautiful, but I'm too flighty to have a dog, let alone a needy plant.

I've have a few leaves yellow but haven't really lost any. I'm looking forward to getting them back outside but that will probably be closer to Mother's Day when my husband moves his lemon tree outside for the season.

I have always liked bonsai trees, but I like all trees. I have a yard full of oaks, pines, and sweet gums that are big enough to hug me back. I am afraid that I would kill a bonsai from too much attention.

Scottie, you need to get out of the bushes and make some more pipes. I keep checking your site with no luck.

Scottie, you need to get out of the bushes and make some more pipes. I keep checking your site with no luck. Christmas killed December and everyone being sick killed January. I'm back in the shop and have made 12 pipes in the past 2 weeks. The STL show is this weekend. Check my Instagram or Piersel Pipes Facebook page for pics of the pipes I'm taking to the show. If you see one you like, let me know. I'll let one go before this weekend.
