Seven day collection of Pre-Cadogan GBD 549 bulldogs. The Natural is the newest to me via The Pipe Nook. The pair of Varichromes are some of the oldest in my entire collection. Although I'm not the original owner of either, the Varichrome set sparked my initial interest in this shape. Top L to R: New Era, Granitan, Natural. Bottom L to R: Varichrome, Varichrome, Briar Root and Prehistoric. I scored the rack for a few bucks at the local flea market, sanded, stripped and refinished it in a weekend. These are mid-grades in this line; however, there are premium artisan and even factory pipes available which would set me back more for just one than I have invested in this entire set. I wouldn't trade. These all draft perfectly, pass a cleaner all the way through although a couple require the twist method and are outstanding with flakes. Love these Varichromes. Pictures aren't the best but the lettering is crisp on all pipes. I could probably get by for the rest of days just fine with these, my two unfinished unfinished Sav Lumbermen, three Baki meerschaums and a few cobs.

Awesome ... congrats! How does one go about telling pre- from post-Cadogan? I have a couple of Pre-historic GBD's and would be interested to know.

The short answer is if the rondell on the stem is brass or silver, it's pre-Codogan as these were discontinued after the merger with Comoy and replaced with less expensive painted ones. pipedia.org/wiki/GBD

Great collection of a very classy shape. I know that Al Jones would love to see these. Thanks John. They actually look better than the pictures. Good lettering on the stummels and the stems are all in good shape too after some minor rehab work. I'm not familiar with Mr. Jones but can definitively state I've taken a pass on many of these over the last ten years or so which were quite obviously ruined by a buffer in the wrong hands, either lettering, rondell or both.

Great collection, Mark. I love the Varichrome on the right especially. Also that rack almost has a kind of Cabinet of Dr Caligari quality to it. Is it unsymmetrical or is just a trick of the shadow?

We need to get Al to join up over here, though being a mod over there, he might have to use caution.

Nice looking set of pipes, thanks for posting...Bulldogs seem to be great flake pipes, but none of my Bulldogs are GBD's...gotta get to work on that! I have GBD second that smokes flakes really well. This is a 1954 GBD Lumberman that I picked up recently I will try to post my third GBD if I can find the pic..it is a banded Pre-Cadogan, but ist smokes like a champ.

LOL. It's actually quite ordinary and symmetrical up close. I never considered the angles or shadows when I quick snapped the photos. I was simply doing the best I could to get the best angles of the pipes in one place without actually taking the rack down. Any comparison to the 1920 German silent is completely coincidental...however....

I am a member here! I just don't have that much forum time these days. I don't know that I have become the GBD expert but I certainly am a fan of that brand. That's a pretty cool set, and those two Varichromes are somewhat rare. They are pretty high up the grade chart, and I don't believe I've ever seen them in shape 549. I appreciate Les making me aware of this thread, that made me smile today.

Secondly, I may be incorrect but believe the Natural is probably older than the others. Many thanks.
