I was puffing one of my Beckers and thrilled with its delicate stem. It then occurred to me that these would be poor candidates for lunting on that ground. Likewise with Eltangs, Ruthenburgs and Missouri Meerschaums (at least the ones with the original cheap plastic stems). Also some of my pipes have thin walls, so some Dunhills, smaller Beckers and an Ilsted would be subject to burnouts from stray winds. Anyone have opinions and experience?

Yo Les, the best pipe for punting is an MM Diplomat or the Diplomat 5th Ave with the Danish Stem. Or a good Nosewarmer.

I have one of those Dagner MMs and that is what I use when I'm lunting. Heck, I even cruise around the woods on an ATV with it. It is short and easy to balance hands-free. It is also very light, so if I drop it, it can't really suffer any damage under it's own weight. And last but not least, if it does break or get a burnout, it is only a $20 pipe.

I should add that the bit is extremely cheap and I've been through a couple already.

I'm not really sure what you mean by lunting, or punting. If I was going to do an outdoor activity I'd go for an inexpensive Missouri Meerschaum. So if lost or broken it would be no great loss. When I lived near a lake I often would smoke a corn cob, buying a new one because I forgot to include one in my stuff getting ready to go fish. I now have seven or eight because of my forgetfulness. If available I'd got the corn cob pipes with the black plastic stems. The corn cob pipes are a good choice because they don't require breaking in, pretty much being "Broke In" with the first or second smoke.

Check the Estate market for an Orlik Hurricane pipe and you'll be covered come rain or shine.

Lunting = walking while smoking a pipe. I believe.

On the rare occasions that I walk it's usually with a cigar and a glass of scotch. No fear of burnout with a pipe and refills on the scotch are readily available at several neighbors' houses.
