Bouncing from another thread regarding Bing Crosby and Barling Pipes, has brought another question to mind. Now, I know that persons like Sparks and Jim Inks know a lot more about Bing than I do, I have noticed one different distinguishing characteristic of Bing Crosby pipes. Some photos show Bing smoking a pipe with a long shank and a short stem, and others showing a short shank and a long stem. Which is correct?

He is often pictures smoking the "long shank-short stem" in his earlier years. This would be a Lumberman. I think the shorter shank, longer stem which most people refer to as a "Bing" has become the sort of standard of what people associate with him. At the very least, it's the standard that every company that makes a "Bing" model has gone with.

Bing didn't start smoking the Merchant Service style pipes until the mid-1940s. Most of us associate the "Bing style" with the MS pipe, which is the one Basil Meadows recreates. That's the main style Bing smokes for the rest of his life... or until Bing stops smoking some time in the early 1970s.

I would like to get a long stem bing, but my fave pic of him, posted in another thread, is a Canadian, which is what I have in his honor. Either way, the point is it's long and a billiard

A buddy of mine owned one of Bing's actual pipes and I was forced to ogle it for years (he runs a B&M that I used to frequent in Carmel, Ca.). It was a light-stained smooth with a monogrammed silver band, and yep it was an Merchant Services pipe. Basil Meadows completely nails this shape. My Bings are not originals. The left one is from Scottie Piersel and the right one is a recent commission from Ryan Alden. The 4-Square is what Bing was smoking in the movie Holiday Inn.

I have the first Bing Basil made, which he did upon my request since I knew I'd never afford a Merchant Service pipe. I doubt one of those would smoke better than the ones Basil makes.

Well it should...Basil's pipemaking predates the Merchant service...not saying he is old, mind you.... Seriously, he does a fine execution on a Bing's...one needs to look no further.

The closest I can get to Bing-pipes are these two. The Tom Eltang Bing-inspired Stanwell POTY 2010 and a Danish Valsby.

The billiard shape being my favorite, I'm naturally drawn to the so-called "Bing" pipes. Jiminks pointed me towards Basil Meadows pipes a few years back and am am sure glad he did. Here is my collection of Basil's bings/billiards (plus the Christmas Pipe Basil gifted to me).

I love my Savinelli Bing, enough that I'm seriously contemplating a rusticated one to go along with my smooth. They are elegant and work, which, while I admire the golden age of cinema, is of more interest to me than the man the pipe is named after. Of course, that could be why Bing himself favored the basic design. For all his faults, he understood movement and art. And if you think static objects don't "move," then I just don't know what to say.

I have been contemplating the opposite, having a Rusticated. peterd-Buffalo Spirit-Buffalo Spirit owns both versions, so I'll ask him: Any differences between the Smooth and the Rustic, Peter?

His website is defunct because the site host wanted to jack up the price Basil would have to pay to keep it going, and he said that was too much money. You can e-mail Basil: reddog28081@yahoo.com

The two Bing's I have are both by Bruno Nuttens. Both are fine smokers. They're old retrouvé briar that Bruno finished. A Bing Cumberland #9. And a #25 Sterling Silver.
