I recently acquired this on a DVD set. Starring the late, Dennis Farina, I had forgotten how good this series was. Into disc 6 and the series is one evolving storyline. Well written, with some surprising guest actor spots and very effective Music supervision by Todd Rundgren and Al Kooper. One of the highlights, is the American Iron running the streets. It is a virtual car show and a real treat for classic car fans. Before the locale transitions to Las Vegas, the MCU's (Major Crime Unit) area of operations in Chicago, is known as "The Patch" . . . . . . . A solid effort, somewhat ahead of its time in plot, story writing and characterizations, it has been a real treat to watch.

A buddy of mine that is a Scottsdale homicide detective, was formerly a colleague of Farina’s as a Chicago PD Officer. Farina, like so many other Chicago’ans escaped that turdbowl for Arizona where he died from a pulmonary embolism.... great actor, but he really screwed up when he got that felony conviction from the TSA incident. Of all people, he should have known better... or gotten a better attorney.
I concur, that is a good series, in my opinion his best work.

I watch the complete series every other year. Big Del Shannon fan, amazed that he could still hit those notes into the 1990's. Cinematography was so solid, it was like being there. The only reason it's every few years is because Sopranos, Vegas (Chiklis and Quaid), Smallville, and Boardwalk Empire are on my annual list. Men Into Space from 1959 is twice a year, 38 eppies.
PS, yeah, loved Farina

I finished the series last night. A most unsatisfactory ending. Disc 7 was weak, with attempts at humor that were more odd than funny. A 2 episode foray into social consciousness. Montage segments of prior episode bits with a skeleton of a storyline to stitch them together. When writers resort to this trick, you know they've run out of ideas. Disc 8&9 somewhat better, but the series devolved to action adventure, quasiBond moments, romantic back stories and other examples of lazy writing. Too bad, as it was quite strong & enjoyable through first 6 discs, but imo, it loses its mojo when the MCU leaves Chicago.

I don't think it was intended to end, so that created an issue. I didn't mind it as an ending, as it beat Gilligan's Island, which took a made for TV movie to rescue them

Fonzarelli really "jumped the shark" on this one....

Some friends of mine owned Corvairs that were shown in some of the scenes. They got to meet the cast and ate with them several times while filming.

I remember this series from back in the day. Thought they jumped the shark with the move to Vegas. I've often wondered if the show aged well

Great show, but not too worried about a weak ending - how many shows actually end well?
Lots of .45 action, IIRC.
Loved the vintage vibe throughout the series.

I was surprised how well he fit into a slightly comic role as in "Get Shorty". Gone way too soon.
