While I was away from here for a few weeks, one of the things which keep me away was a business trip to The Hague, Netherlands. During one of my days there, I managed to find just enough time to take the train 40km to Amsterdam and visit the Amsterdam Pipe Museum. If you are ever lucky enough to find yourself in Amsterdam, it is well worth taking an hour and a half or so to visit the museum. You enter the museum by going in the walk down entrance to the pipe shop which is attached to the museum. It cost 10 euros to go in the museum accompanied by a guide. The museum collection comes from one person's massive collection. The museum collection focuses on antique and historical pipes. There is nothing modern in the collection. The exhibits include pre-historic stone pipes, antique Dutch clay pipes, antique Dutch porcelain pipes, African pipes, and Chinese opium pipes. The older woman who was my guide was very knowledgable about explaining the exhibits, but she wasn't a pipe smoker. She was a bit surprised at the number of exhibits which I knew what they were. I guess she sees more tourists than actual tobacco pipe smokers. That could very well be as when I was close to wrapping up my visit 3 more people came into the museum and they had all obviously just come from one of the Dutch "coffee shops" just up the block from the museum. After I was done looking around the museum, I spent some time looking around the attached pipe shop. The shop has a very large selection of pipes. It also has a lot of antique pipes and old and new books for sale. I'll say a bit more about the shop and include a pic in the post that I make on the Pipes board about the pipe that I bought there. One thing that is worth mentioning here is that I was surprised to find out that the pipe shop does not accept plastic; no credit or debit card machine. Cash only. Bring your euros if you plan on buying a pipe. They also do not sell pipes online as the owner believes that a buyer needs to see and feel a pipe in order to properly purchase one. The museum and pipe shop combo makes the Amsterdam Pipe Museum a definite "must visit", if ever in Amsterdam, for every pipe smoker. Here are several pics: (sorry for the quality, the room lighting was dim) Antique smoking chair. You sit facing the back. You keep pipe and tobacco in the box. Close the lid and lean on it while smoking. A shot of the pipe shop from their website:

The top of the lid was padded with a cloth cover. I had read and these sorts of chairs and had seen drawings and pictures before, but this is the first time that I've seen a real one.

A footnote: I have now been to two pipe museums. The other is Paul's Pipe Museum which is located upstairs in Paul's Pipe Shop in Flint, MI.

And to think I’ve been to Amsterdam a dozen times and never knew this existed! Every other famous site I’ve seen, including my wife taking us to the Sex museum! And never once seeing this. I just told her we should plan Amsterdam for next year.

Remember to take plenty of euros since the shop doesn’t take plastic.

I have a good friend who lives in Amsterdam. I must ask him to visit the museum sometime and be my 'eyes'. He is also an excellent photographer, so maybe we can score some more good pictures to post here.

My wife's aunt married a guy from Holland, everytime I have been around them they complain about America....restaurants provide more food than necessary, walked through Costco while he complained about consumerism, he bitched about super duty trucks, admitted that they lost their breaks while pulling their caravan on a holiday in the mountains, he hates tobacco and says that it should be outlawed. They decided to visit the grand canyon asked if we could meet the at the airport. I showed up with my .45 on my hip with my double magazine carrier and chewed on a cigar stub when we picked them up at Sky Harbor airport....that expedited our visit. If we go over there...I think I will go to the museum instead.

Looks like it's a very interesting museum. The use to have a web site that I check out long ago I wonder if it's the only pipe museum left. I know the Dunhill, Austrian and the three here in the states that I've been to, The Valentine Collection in Richmond, Burla Collection in Illinois and The Pipe Smokers Hall of Fame in Indiana are long gone.

Nope. It is not the only pipe museum left. Many of you have heard of Paul's Pipe Shop in Flint, MI. However, you may not know that it is actually Paul's Pipe Shop, Paul's Pipe Hospital, and Paul's Pipe Museum. Paul's Pipe Museum is upstairs from the pipe shop. Admission is free, but you can only go in the museum if an employee or one of us shop regulars is available to escort you. If you search for "Paul's Pipe Shop" on YouTube, you'll find several videos. Note: Ignore the results for "Paul's Pipes" that's a different Paul. In particular, the first 2/3 of this video shows Paul's Pipe Museum:

The museum is a must see when your in the area. I left with plenty of tobacco and two pipes. My grandfather knew the place well, he’s been @ Paul’s from the 50’s through the 60’s.
