In another thread, someone mentioned that they never smoked the last third of a bowl.
While this may happen to me occasionally, it's often the last third I'm looking forward to with those concentrated flavors. I even start with my tobacco more dry so that this portion won't be a wet mess.
Let's hear what everyone's normal routine is concerning this aspect.

Darrin I have to agree with you. The flavors of the last 1/3 is what I look for. At night I will smoke down to about the half way mark so I can enjoy the rest in the morn.

I never smoke to the bottom. I am not sure if it was something I said or not. I find the taste changes for the worse - to harsh and "ashy" for my liking.

It varies with the tobacco and pipe. Some combinations I am sucking ashes before I realize it. Others may get nasty halfway through the bowl. I just go with the flow, and dump it if I am not enjoying it.

If the combo works, I like to smoke nearly every shard, but if not, I will surrender the dottle.

Depends very much on the tobacco, the pipe, time and my mood. Some times a little gets dumped, sometimes I save it for later, sometimes it gets smoked all the way down.

I would add, that sometimes I can't get a handle on the first 1/3 of a bowl, but form a better and more complete sense by mid-bowl and sometimes it is that last 1/3 bowl that ties it all together.

I will agree with, it depends on the pipe and the tobacco. Heck even my mood or what I may have eaten. Sometimes it’s “what? It’s all gone” and others, why am I still smoking this?

When I manage to nail the moisture level of a blend and it does smoke all the way down, it's a feeling of accomplishment. haha I almost always tap out the last bit. Usually a quarter or so. Also some blends get an ashtray flavour by that point as all that fine ash sifts down in there. For me anyway.

I tend to quit a bowl at about the last quarter, which is where most blends, to my taste, get lost in a harsh muddle of unpleasantness.

Sometimes they're good to the bottom, sometimes the last less than a quarter is rank, wet dottle. If it gets to that, the minute I get that nasty flavor like the butt end of a cigar, look it out.

Some tobaccos get better as the bowl burns down, others get wetter & harder to keep going.
I usually try to smoke it until it's gone unless it starts to be a hassle, then it gets dumped.

Just hope that it's not the last 'Turd' of the bowl!

I'd have to say I agree with almost everyone here. It just depends.
For me, Burley can get a bit weird in the last 1/3. Burley/VA's are usually fine.

Right down to the bottom....ash or small dottle is all that's left.....well 99% of the time anyway.

With very few exceptions, I always smoke a blend to the finish. I'd have to hate it to do otherwise, and if I'm reviewing a blend, it's important to smoke it all the way through.

On the rare occasions I make it to the bottom of a bowl, it's almost always in a meer in which I normally enjoy Lats. I seldom smoke the heel in briars or cobs. I normally find the middle third of those to be the most enjoyable after which I'm more inclined to move on.

Normally I smoke all the way to the end. If it gets “funky” I take that as my pipe telling me, “time for a cleaning”.

I'm too cheap not to trynand smoke the whole way through but I will cop to sometimes having difficulty lighting the last whisps of ribbon cut tobaccos in wide pipe bowls and flakes in deep bowls. I agree with the others that if the last 1/3 is too harsh or acrid then you'd best consider cleaning the pipe or emptying some of the ash as you smoke.

After the bowl burns a third, I usually dredge and dump the ash.
After the second third, dredge and dump the ash, and it isn't unusual for me to turn the tobacco over, and it provides a great smoke.
Kind of like resonated Panama Red on the enjoyment level.

Some tobaccos and pipe combos just seem to get mushy and acrid at the bottom. For those, I often pour in bit of those Nodding clay stones before I load the tobac. It saves on tobacco and eliminates the foul taste.

I try to puff my dottles to the proverbial fine white ash. Waste not,.... As it turns out, one of my criteria for a blend to make it into the Top300 Cellar is tolerance, tastewise, for a complete bowl's enjoyment. I might have to stir and relight, but that's ok. Drying my tobacco to a crisp helps.

This evening's jar-aged Newminster Superior Navy Flake was nicely dried; the flavor was refreshing, full, nutty n sweet... all the way to wh/gr ash. The RO Acadian was more moist and became a smoking rubber tire at the last 1/4... otherwise it's a classic smoke that dares to be great and succeeds, like all the RO Series blends.

I generally smoke a bowl down to nothing. Most the time, I am smoking Va or English or Burley. So, I don’t have Aro casings giving me a hunky mess at the bottom. Also, I’ll usually pause a time or two during a bowl and let my pipe sit for a couple minutes with a cleaner inserted to absorb moisture.
IMHO, if a pipe is getting harsh in the last part of the bowl, either too much tar and moisture have accumulated or the pipe needs a good cleaning.

I always finish the whole pipe. Heck, the way I know a bowl is done is when I try to light it and it will not catch because there is only ash left. I agree that the bottom of the bowl is different, and sometimes harsher, than the top. However, I think of that as the natural progression of the smoke. The bottom is not bad, just different.
Maybe it is the way I smoke, but I never end up with wet dottle or a goopy mess at the bottom of my bowl. That probably contributes to me always finishing it.

Maybe the piper smokes weaker aromatics, where all that is left in the bottom third is blah tobacco?

Another good post raised from the “ DEAD “ by the Master of digging up old threads!!!

(in a good way) I try to smoke to the end. I have a couple aro's that I get depressed over when they really start to taste great I know they are nearing the end.

Leave the bottom third empty with the cannon ball pack and breath smoke. I was smoking for over 25 years before I could taste aromatics, now they taste exactly the way they smell without having to sit in a pool of moisture at the bottom of the chamber.
