What tobaccos do you like best, and what is about them that you like so much. Do you like the Heavy stuff, full of nicotine, do you prefer a Milder blend, or somewhere in between? Or do you prefer a particular tobacco for a different reason? To start off the conversation, I am not a nicotine fan at all. Tried OJK once, and thought that I was going to die. Also 1792 was not for me. I like Captain Black Dark a lot, it has a nice taste, but is is a little bit too mild. I'm still searching for that 'perfect' blend. Some of you more experienced pipe smokers may have either found that 'perfect' blend, or have come closer to finding it than I have so far. Please share your thoughts and views on the subject.

I am a big fan of Gawith & Hoggarth's Louisiana Flake - you might want to try it if you like Virginia/Perique mixtures. If you like burley, you might want to try Sir Walter Raleigh Aromatic - it is a very good smoke! The best aromatics I've had came from a tiny smoke shop in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, The Gatlinburlier. They sell samplers too. gatlinburlier.com/If you like English blends, you might want to try GL Pease Gaslight.

Crap, how could I forget. My two big burley loves. I have so many it's hard to keep track of For flavor, Butternut Burley For one of the most total regular tobacco smokes, Five Brothers. No top notes. Just burley blast

David....with what blend are you starting out for Bullet? I think he's looking at my Granger Pouch. Of course, I will give him a fresh cob. Problem is he's from Kennett, Mo. He might think it's toilet paper Story behind that crack. I think it was Cheryl Crow on the Tonight Show (She's from Kennett) who said we should be limited to one square of toilet paper per poop. My reaction: Okay for her to say. She's from Kennett and they still use corn cobs So, if I give him a cob and he grabs a newspaper and heads outside to do an Al Bundy, I may go ahead and give him a briar

Over the past few years I'v grown to like the plugs from the British Isles- Warrior, Velvan, Mick McQuaid, Condor and Revor. Alas, most are gone now but I love them and have enough to last me quite a while. I also developed a taste for Lakeland blends. Drastic departures from my usual lat blends.

Among my favorites which are both affordable and available:
G.L Pease Quiet Nights. The combination of red va, oriental, Latakia and perique hits me right between the eyes.
My earliest cellar builders which are still in the regular rotation include Escudo, McClelland #5100, #2015 and Mac Baren Va #1.
Uhle's #00, Perfection Plug and #300 are top shelf burley.
Flakes include Orlik Golden Slice, Dunhill, Sam Gawith Best Brown, Full Va and Mac Baren Old Dark Fired.
Favorite aromatic is Mac Baren Vanilla Cream Loose Cut/Vanilla Flake.
Under-rated favorites well represented in the cellar include McClelland Stave-aged Va 35 Ribbon, Cornell and Diehl Exhausted Rooster and Kajun Kake.

Love 'em all for their varying percentages of latakia, Va and oriental. Don't really like much outside of lat blends and a couple orientals.

I prefer tobacco with mild to medium strength (i.e., nic hit), at my age. Aside from that my tobacco tastes are eclectic and I smoke a wide variety of categories: VaPers (e.g., Dunbar), natural cavendish (many), burley (ABF, MacB Navy Flake), and some aros that I consider of some quality and which do not bite me.

Esoterica Dunbar. From the very first time I smelled it in the jar at my local tobacconist. That maddening melange of honeydew, graham cracker, and melting snow in an early-spring hay field.
Thinking about it makes me want to hop on over to the B&M this very moment and procure all I can. In fact, I am going to do just that right now.

Haddo's Delight - A wonderful mixture of Virginias, Perique and Burley with what I assume is a plum winde added to it. Haddo's is pretty unique and it ages well, becoming smoother through the years.
RO Perique Series GP-11 - One of the traits of Russ' better blends is an impeccable balancing act between constituents that offers both a very tasty smoke while somehow defining the varietals. GP-11 is easily my favorite of the Perique Series because I love the flavor and the components are top notch in themselves.
Dunbar - The blend of Virginias is very well balanced. The Perique is a minor player. But that apricot topping just puts it all together for me.
Dorchester - Just a delicious smoke
H&H Anni Kake - A very mellow, perfectly balanced blend with just a touch of booze to add some extra life. Easily an all day smoke.
Savinelli Doblone d'Oro - Since I'm not going to cough up $$$ for Va/Per Three Nuns I'll do the next best thing, which is Doblone d'Oro. It's about the closest thing to the old Va/Per Three Nuns being made today.
HU Makhuwa - Smoking this is like smoking a rich chocolate milkshake.
HU Director's Cut - A powerhouse of flavors in the German manner Just a joy to smoke
Motzek Strang - A Va/Per made with rich components and that make many American blends taste like cardboard in comparison. Smoked at the proper moisture, which is to say almost bone dry, the fruity Perique really pops.
Germain's Rich Dark Flake - Not sold in the US, it is a sister to Stonehaven, but with a slightly more complex flavor profile and a hint of ale alongside the treacle in the topping.
Capstan Blue - A classic Virginia for well over 100 years
McClelland 40th Anniversary Blend - What I wish Christmas Cheer was. Maybe the best Red Virginia blend being made today, which is high praise since I'm also a devotee of...
McCrainie's Red Ribbon and Red Flake - Made from a single crop of the finest Red Virginia and only when something really special comes along. That's why there are so few vintages of it. I'm very happy because I was able to acore a few tins of the '96 vintage at the WCPS a month ago.
GL Pease Union Square - Greg has made a true classic Virginia with this blend. Just a thoroughly enjoyable smoke.
GL Pease Telegraph Hill - Greg's Va/Per is another standout that ages beautifully, but which can be enjoyed fresh.
PS - LBF - Crap when fresh, but given 4 years or more to age, it's one of the finest blends of its kind.
Rattray's HOTW - This is the blend that turned me onto Virginias and away from English blends. The blend of Virginias and Perique is very satisfying.
Rattray's Marlin Flake - Give it 10 years and it's like smoking crack, it's soooo good.
Stonehaven - Raisins and chocolate, the most delicious bag note in the known Universe. Unless smoked at the proper moisture it doesn't offer much flavor, but when the stars align, WOW!
Sixpence - Didn't like it when first I tried it, but after a year it was very enjoyable. I'm letting a number of tins age and am looking forward to smoking them up.
I could go on with another several dozen that I rotate through, but that's enough for now.

Didn't think so. You and sablebrush bought it all! I wish. Motzek retired and sold his shop and blending operation last year and the new owner hasn't produced any more of it, though he was trained in its making. The new owner said that he's been unable to get the particular Virginia used in Strang since he took over. Jim and I were fortunate to be in on a group purchase of the last batch turned out by Motzek last year, before he turned over the business. I hope that it reappears in the future. There's nothing quite like it. Some think that Director's Cut is very close, but I don't.

I like Skiff because of it's low nicotine, smell of naphtaline, and slight sourness; the cut packs and lights well too.

I cracked a tin of 2014 Christmas cheer yesterday, not a lot of age on it, but it provided a fine smoke.....it sure burns a long time be it in my Don Warren freehand at the pipe club or in my Austro Hungarian in the house.

I've always been a fan of McCranie's Red Ribbon for Red Va as well. They didn't take credit cards a couple years ago when I ordered a dozen tins of the 2008 cut. They sent me the tins, an invoice and I sent them a check. I'm not sure how they stay in business with that old school model but it says a lot about the pipe smoking community. I haven't tried the 40th Anniversary McClelland yet but I cellared three tins. My understanding is this wasn't an exclusive limited release and more will be available in the future so I may have to pop one of those tins.

I screwed around and missed the boat on the last batch of McCrainie’s that had age on it.... I have a single tin of the 2008. Good to hear about the 40th anniversary, from what I have read, it is a pretty safe bet for cellaring.

McClelland is planning on sustaining production of 40th Anniversary. I was told this by Mary McNeil at this year's Chicago Show.

Well, that's damn good to know as I think it's the best McClelland Virginia there is (that I've tried). I have 9 tins of it in the cellar, but am glad we will be able to get more later.
