Somebody over at BOTL just posted, "The cheap Stanwells smoke HOT, as in you can barely hold the bowl. I'll not make that mistake again..." Anyone else have that experience? I think I'll order ones with thicker bowls, anyway. Well, that's one pipers experience and opinion. Any briar can be made to smoke hot, if careless. I read all Black & Brown user reviews (over 70) and what convinced me, were those reviews from experienced pipers who were ordering again. Having ordered 3 pipes, I am obviously hoping for the best. I'll exercise reasonable care on break in, with the knowledge in mind, that the Italians do know a bit about pipe making. Mike,That's a good answer. Not know the person who said their pipe smoked hot, I wasn't sure just what to say.I have a cheap Casillero that smokes great but have read reviews that are contrary to my expierience. So with that in mind I will be very careful of breaking in my new pipes. As they say "Slow and easy". For what it's worth, I have a Stanwell dublin that smokes hot with coarse and ribbon cuts but not flakes for whatever reason (probably the ones ya'll listed).

Got mine yesterday. The #86 looks great. The #405 is very nice, too, but has a big-arse fill they didn't bother to sand so it looks like a pimple. I might try my hand at some "brushing" to make it less obvious. All in all, these are really nice pipes especially for the price. I much more impressed with them than I was with the Peterson XMas pipes, which cost a hell of a lot more. I'll post pics later.

I got mine and smoked it yesterday. I know that this is just a personal thing, but I hate, hate, hate the finish. Holding it is like hearing fingernails on a blackboard. Also, it has a terrible chemical taste. One more to toss in the loser box.

What is it about the finish that you hate so much?

I should have wiped the bowl out with alcohol first, but it obviously had a lot of stain and/or finish lacquer in the bowl. Otherwise it seems well made. I also bought a Ropp of the same shape that isn't as nicely fitted, but it's comfortable in my hand and doesn't have a chemical taste.

If I needed the pipe, I would probably just lightly sand it and give it a coat of wax. But as it is, it isn't worth fooling with.

I ordered one of the straight bulldogs. Like most for the price and all the other discounts couldn't pass it up.

Y'all are making me feel bad now.I'm sorry the texture is a bit rough. It seems alright to me though.Course,I still have some thick calluses from working in the woods. That and I like a pipe I can get a good grip on,I've started dropping things lately.

Got my #190, #95 and #32 yesterday. Too early to praise a new pipe, but I have not made a better buy on a new pipe, since those Czech pipes turned up in the shops @$20 , a decade ago. I am only getting a little bowl coating taste at the final 1/3, but caking will eliminate that. I have no problems with the looks, feel or symmetry of the finish.

I am with Matthew on this one i like the slightly sharp texture for good gripping purposes that and heck i think i could strike a match on the side of the pipe very easy so far i am in process of breaking in 2 of these pipes with good results I am Happy happy enough to get another one for back up reserve

"Youse pays yer money and youse take yer chances" . It wasn't the first time I did this and it won't be the last. If I don't have 170 pipes I like better, I would probably love it.

I went ahead and pulled the trigger on a Rhodesian and a bulldog, the discount code cocoa still works for getting two pipes for $40.00.

The straight bulldog I ordered came in. As several have mentioned it looks even better in person. Mine has 0 fills on the outside as far as I can tell. The coating on the inside did have 1 "bump" which came off when poked at. I am super pleased with the quality for 20 bucks. Might have to pick up a few more. The feel of the pipe is a little rough. No big deal, I might run some steel wool over it out of curiosity if it would take the edge off.

Got mine. I actually like the weird texture to them, but I’m a strange and ineffable kind of guy. If I were effable, I would probably have better things to do than hang out on interwebz fora.

During break in with Carter Hall, the Bulldog can run hot. The Billiard is about average regarding bowl temperature. The bent Rhodesian has not gone past warm. In the description box at P&C, when clicked it just redisplays the page I was on, so I couldn't get specs. The #95 Rhodesian turned out to be a 9MM, unbeknownst to me when ordering. I have 9MM pipes, but didn't want to hassle with more filters, so used an adapter/reducer I had on hand. The resulting draw was quite good and I like this pipe the best of the 3.

That's a pretty good premium! Maybe they like you, or maybe they just aren't selling?

That sharp hand feel issue lessens with handling. Smoked pipes are now smoother to grip. I also rubbed them with terry cloth before smoking, to knock those striations down. Have sanded the bowl coating, swabbed out with alcohol and applied diluted honey coating. This definitely helps the taste issue and the pipes smoke cooler. My break in tobac is always CarterHall, but it has not worked with these pipes (runs hot), so I just smoked whatever I felt like in them. At this price, I have been able to amass Classic Stanwell shapes that I couldn't afford in their Danish legacy versions. They won't smoke as good obviously, but their good enough and I love the aesthetics of the Heritage designs. Each delivery came with a new 20% off code, so 4 pipes with free shipping total: $64. Being weak with PAD, I have gone all in for 11 pipes. Note: Check description, as half of these are 9 mm. That description box didn't display on Desktop on my tablet and I ended up with 4 filter pipes. Did display the info when using the Mobile display on my tablet. Offer is still in effect. Enter: limitedgift in Search box and they show for $20 versus everyday $50 price.

I'm so tempted by 4 more pipes, and there are suddenly exactly 4 shapes I'd really like to have! Haven't smoked the first two yet, but will follow your method of breaking in.

Well, it works out to $16.00 a pipe. Less than a decent estate on Ebay. Not that I am encouraging you . . . . . . just sayin'. -

Just bought the 56, 139, 190, and 182. If I'm not happy with any of them, I'm sure they'd sell on ebay for more than what I paid.

It is much better looking in person than it is in the photos on the website. I also ordered the 56 and the 182 today.

That was my experience too with the #190. You make a good point. The photos are not that great. A couple look downright goofy (though that's not the case). All the pipes I got looked better in person than the site photo.

So far, the two I got are very good smokers, they are drilled right, no noticeable fills, very light Briar... the wire brush finish isn’t quite as uniform on the bowl facing the smoker, but it isn’t like anyone but a pipe smoker would notice looking closely. The bowls smoked fine with no break in.... I was roaming the halls last night and decided for a few more, the link still takes you to the discounted pipes... shipping was only $3 and change.
pipesandcigars.com/limitedgift
What I got this far:
32 straight bulldog 406 bent Rhodesian
On the way:
83 Bent Billiard 56 Straight Liverpool 86 Bent Pot
While trying to be Uber-cheap by culling through my inbox emails from P&C, it confirmed what I thought... some of the discount codes are user specific, a random code is generated for that user in what looks like an ad in your inbox. And always hang onto your most recent catalog so you can get your customer number... sometimes there is a prompt requesting your customer ID that is nowhere in your account profile. Or, simply record your ID number when you do get the next magazine.

The #56 is misidentified on the invoice as a Liverpool. More modest in length than most Canadians, its oval shank definitely marks it a Canadian. They do list it accurately on the page description. I've noticed this discrepancy between page and invoice on a couple of my pipes.
PS: remember to verify as several of these pipes are 9mm (not that, that is a bad thing).
