Good story, Charlie. Also, "Wizard of Wood" is a catchy title ... think he'd mind if I used it occasionally?

This is great. I am down to one friend who served in Vietnam. He feels like it was another life. He was a medic, but spent a lot of his time gathering urine specimens for drug tests. No wonder they thought no one cared.

I am glad that he didn’t have to receive the awards posthumously.

About 5 yrs ago I received a Dept of Defense letter telling me about the 5 Medals I could apply for , I burned the letter and drank 1/2 fifth of whiskey. F><k em, they weren't there when I needed them.

Fantastic story Charlie.Lots of young soldiers gave their lives in that war and to be honest there never was any support for the survivors when they cane home.

The story came to mind as I received an email from Eric, (I had emailed him a link to this story and thanked him for his service back when I posted the article).
If he’s willing to sit for an interview, he just may end up on a podcast in the future, if he does so I will post it here.

The latest Pipesmagazine podcast is of Brian interviewing Eric...It was a very well done podcast. His Vietnam experience must have been pure hell, all of it was jungle combat.
Dramatwist might enjoy hearing about how Eric is working with a screenplay writer, shows based on his poem will be featured in Medford Oregon for a debut, then on to Humboldt county, Salinas, San Francisco, LaJolla (San Diego).
I am going to try and make it to one of them.

He’s holding a Grabow?... can’t see what the other one is in the pic. Yep, a smooth Grabow apple. And I'd bet money the other pipe is also a Grabow...a rustic 'pear' shape. I have one. Can't get much more American than his story of service...down to the details of smoking a couple of Grabows and having a PBR.

Yeah, in the interview he said that he favors the Grabow Lark... judging by all the pics, the straight version. www.pipesandcigars.com/mobile/p/dr-grabow-lark-pipes-pipes/1473703/He is a one tobacco guy, dark cavendish mixed with natural cavendish. He definitely has the rank of codger! A minor point of clarification, earlier I said that he works at Blue Ox, in the interview and in the video above he states that he owns the place.

Wow, never knew there was someone else that had experienced "not fitting in" and having the same wants of "just make it yourself" without having to depend on a store to provide you with what you need. Half the time I can't find it anyway and have to make it so..... In everything he said I know he has walked the same road as me, would love to meet him, just a shame he lives so far.

His whole story is quite a journey, his military career was remarkable, going the extra mile to give the kids a chance that are running out of options, and producing materials the old way of craftsmanship, he is definitely helping to make a better world than the one he entered.
I bet you would get on fine with Eric, Ron.... if you have never been to the redwoods, it is a magical place... sensory overload in a really good way. I conversed with Eric in a few emails... if I ever end up back in Norcal, it is on my to do list to see him... he told me anytime I am welcome.
