I have a poor selection of matches in my town. Home Supply and Cartwright. The last box by Home resulted in 80% being hand lighted with my Zippo. Though based in Maine, they are (ironically) made in India (and I suspect by child labor). The Cartwright, are made in China and falsely advertised as strike anywhere, which is a joke, as they will only light from the striker strip. They will also flame up in 2 or 3 spots, which can damage a rim. What matches do you use and where do you get them? Is there a quantity best buy out there that can be legally shipped?

I use the diamond brand mainly because they are still made in the USA and are easy to find. Strike on box are easier to find than the strike anywhere match.

Failing everything else, Amazon sells diamond matches, which I've been using since JC was a lance corporal. I think they're still made in the USA.

I have some strike on box stick matches as we called them as kids. These damned things won't stay lit long enough to put to my pipe. Next supply will be strike anywheres. I have a red and green zippo pipe lighter and about 90 cheap butanes. Got a hundred for fifteen bucks. Half way down on fuel they quit working, but were worth the 15$
Great thread as I was thinking this all day

I name all my matches "Sparky" ... although some are just a flash in the pan.
I use the Diamond strike on the box long kitchen matches for the most part, but also have the small Diamond strike anywhere matches. The strike anywhere matches seem to work better with sandpaper than the strip on the box though.

I've got a dozen or so boxes of the diamond greenlight 300 count matches. Pick em up for $1 a box @ dollar Tree

Maya or Clasicos depending what's on sale but I'd much rather a short Bic lighter. Flama brand matches I reject on principle.

My tobacconist throws 5-6 boxes in the bag every time I stop for a couple tins. They have a custom designed box for the shop and say Japan on the side. Now that I think of it- I have never had one break or fizzle out, so they must be well made. I can honestly tell no difference when lighting with a BiC, so that is what I prefer.

Small Diamond matches from the supermarket. It used to be the larger kitchen matches but now they only sell the small ones. Go figure.

I bought a bunch of these for $1 a box at academy sports a few years ago with free shipping...now the only place you can find the large strike anywhere UCO matches are on Amazon or Ebay for robber baron prices. You can find the smaller ones, but they are still pricey. www.walmart.com/ip/Strike-Anywhere-Matches-10-P-Multi-Colored/45681339I am thinking that regulations on strike anywhere matches for shipping companies put them in the hazard class, so you cannot find the large ones anywhere.

I have a small collection of boxes around, mostly free from Boswell, Smoking Pipes and others. "Strike Anywhere" won't strike anywhere but they're still pretty top shelf in a pinch.

My favorites are Swan Vestas, but they are darned hard to find in my bailiwick. Otherwise I rely on my dwindling supply of Diamond brand Strike Anywhere Matches and Ohio Blue Tip Kitchen Matches.
I have yet to try the Greenlights. Are they the same length as the Diamonds and Ohio Blue Tips?

If you've not tried the cactus Maya matches from HEB you're doing it wrong. You can fold them in half, they don't break. Plus, they're essentially free at ten boxes of fifty each for 70¢. The tray only opens on one end, so the matches don't fall out, and they have a flap over half the tray, also so they don't fall out. Box has a striker on both sides, but you'll only need one side for the fifty matches. They're awesome. And five hundred for 70¢.

Yeah, the Maya’s are a great deal.
Kinda pissed about onerous transportation regulations basically ending production of strike anywhere matches.

I agree with trailboss, @siminettpratt makes those matches sound unbeatable. Yup, Mexico makes some great matches....except for Flama.

Makes me wonder if they get the thorns from tequila bottlers for next to nothing.

Makes me wonder if they get the thorns from tequila bottlers for next to nothing. I can't imagine they do, blue agave is much more expensive than your run of the mill cactus. Maybe if we were talking about prickly pear farms...

Yeep. If you didn't click the HEB and Amazon links, HEB will sell you 12,000 of the large Diamond strike anywhere matches for $10.32. Amazon is asking $1,499.00. Not a misprint, fifteen hundred bucks.
Amazon is good for some things though. I have to eat these pills every day. Around here at HEB (and CVS and Krogers etc), they cost a dollar each. I get them on Amazon for 400 tablets for $14.47, no tax and free shipping. Not $433 with tax.
So, HEB will sell you matches for 99.99% off, and Amazon will sell you pills for 99.97% off. Shop around, I guess.

Thanks everyone, for the positive input and leads. My Dollar store had Blue Diamond 32's and Greenlight 300. The 32 are 3/4 the length of the Greenlight. When lighted, the Greenlight give off a green spark. The 32 are handy size when doing chores or going somewhere. I tried to order from HEB, but their display pages and checkout overrun my browser window. Too bad, as I was curious about the cactus matches.
