I know, big jump across a broad stream stream trying anything trailboss posts but it's working for me. Every now and then pipe smokers come across simple nuggets which are real game changers. They were always there. It just took a simple nudge from one a wee bit wiser to discover the benefits. Some time ago I was told the secret to Mac Baren is pack light, light light and sip light. Real game changer that one. Among other Mac Baren offerings, Va #1 in particular became one of my favorites afterwards and is still a staple in my regular rotation. In a recent thread, Charlie recommended stirring a bowl while smoking to get to the bottom. For years, all I've done is tamp and dump. Now, half way down the bowl I stir which creates an entirely new plethora of flavors as well as enables me to get closer to the bottom of every bowl than before. Thanks Charlie.

Props to trailboss for his sound advice! Sadly, the Mac Barren blends are typically (and unfairly) scathed as tongue-burners, when the real culprit is poor smoking technique.

Thanks for the kudo’s, I think that somewhere down the line, I learned that technique from some other person. If like me, occasionally in the process after you stir it and draw in some ash on your tongue, it will be... “$&!#, Charlie!”

Man, I always read that stirring was taboo. I never questioned it before, but come to think about it there's no reason not to. I'm gonna try it.

I can unscrew my tamper for a thick poker. The Czech tool has a thinner one. Both work for doing this and thanks to Charlie for the idea. I also DID note a little flavor change, less ashy.

Great advice. I just got into a tin of Virginia #1. I smoked a bit hot (User error I’m sure). But I did slow way down and stir the Pot.... literally as it was a Castello Trademark group G Pot. I have a total of six sins of #1. I may go through a couple more to ingrain slowing down. It helped my golf swing!

Try using the poker on your pipe tool to break up the last half of the bowl. Then lightly tamp and light. I do this with most flakes I smoke.

After a while when my pipe goes out, I will gently stir the ash and dump it. I then use my tamper to scrape the side of the bowl to get the unburnt tobacco in the middle and then tamp lightly. I have found trying to light my pipe though a pipe of ash messes with the flavors. I might do this 3 times a bowl if I have to.

I see this thread has been resurrected, so here's a question...I'm I right in assuming that you dump the ash out BEFORE you stir?
