During a sale at PC last spring I picked up a Xikar Pipeline Lighter.
First impressions were, it has some heft, weighs more (66 grams) than my standard Zippo with pipe insert (58 grams) . Fit and finish is good.
It’s backed by lifetime guarantee from the USA company that sells them, although they are made in China.
It worked flawlessly for 7 months then started to have issues and thought to myself here we go, the complaints it has received are valid. Took more than one spin of Flint wheel to light, and many times would not light, poor flame even with it turned up to high, sprayed butane out and sparked but would not light.
When I fill it, about every 2 weeks, and it sees use many times all day long, I always clean the soot buildup on the chrome casing, lift arm etc and get it looking like the day it arrived.
I was getting ready to take advantage of the guarantee and send it in but thought I never really cleaned the nozzle good. So with pipe cleaners in hand and some Everclear I went to work paying attention to cleaning nozzle thoroughly and 10 minutes later and a proper refill (with butane you have to purge the air first then fill), the lighter once again works as designed.
I know it’s not an Old Boy, and at 1/4 the price (because it was on sale, now it’s about 1/2 the cost but that’s without added discounts now being offered) I recommend this Lighter. But for indoor use, it’s the same as a bic when it comes to outdoors in the wind IMO.
So if anyone was thinking of adding one to their cart, especially with all the sales and add on discounts PC is offering and you want an old boy type Lighter, my experience is go for it, just take the time to clean it regularly and it should work just fine. If not send it in and they either fix or replace for free (you do have to pay shipping costs to send it in however, no different than sending in a Zippo.
I use primarily for charring light and it won’t replace my Zippo especially when out and about.
*Note, I am not a representative of the company nor have I received any compensation in my review and I paid for the lighter. I also offer only MY experience with the lighter to this point in time.
