That looks like 1960 cool. I think you could fit similar output in one quarter of the space and have way more room for your tobacco stash and pipe racks.

Be that as it may (though it probably never was), the thought of this setup has been part of my dreams for a long time. I had 4 reel to reels at one time. No house. Now I have a house but no reel to reels

I'm with PA Pipe guy. The old tech is cool, but a huge space killer. I'd keep the vinyl and put the rest in storage. That room and furniture is gorgeous though. Funny how decor and fashion come back around. Maybe it's just my taste tough. I've always loved 60s-70s style. That colour palate of the pea green, rust orange and faux wood. Someday, gentleman. When I own a home it will look like the set of the Brady Bunch. Haha

I remember a couple instances going to individuals houses where they had reel-to-reels...it was mindblowing how long the play time was compared to any other device at the time...and the guys that had them, definitely had the cool factor going for them. I was super meticulous on caring for my vinyls, always had a discwasher at the ready. When CD's came out I rid myself of them...I sure wish I still had them, but not so much as to want to invest the time or money in chasing down old albums. I always thought that this would be a pretty cool place to have...not for growing weed mind you though...has a real cave, that would be a great mancave. 15 feet X 100 yards you could cellar a lot of tobacco. The story about it....even has a Hogans hero's type escape hatch. modernnotion.com/tennessee-pot-cave/

The mid-century modern man cave definitely brings back memories of being a kid in the 60's & 70's, raking the shag carpet, and wearing bell bottom jeans. But for me personally, I've always liked the old english gentleman's club / library look...

The one downstairs I can't get to.

I have often thought we need a modern day Diogenes Club, but one that would allow me to be a member! I'm an unsociable person, lol.

M'Lady, more important than gender these days is the importance of "getting it." It's not a place for spousal discussion. It's a place where the most foul language you hear is "Good God, man!" Conversations are whispered. Chess is played. In the evenings a game of Whist, but not in the quiet rooms. Books are read and the only noise from the reader is an occasional "hmm" or "harumph."
I have absolutely no doubt that you already get this and would be an integral part of our quiet time and quiet discussion.
Am I wrong? I think not!

Charlie, I've been fortunate enough to have been through the Biltmore mansion a couple of times. The thing I remember about the smoking room you referenced, was the fact that the walls were Leather! The wisdom at the time was that it wouldn't absorb odors from the tobacco smoking. The place is unbelievable. His vast library and collection of books throughout the house is really incomprehensible.

“There are many men in London, you know, who, some from shyness, some from misanthropy, have no wish for the company of their fellows. Yet they are not averse to comfortable chairs and the latest periodicals. It is for the convenience of these that the Diogenes Club was started, and it now contains the most unsociable and unclubbable men in town. No member is permitted to take the least notice of any other one. Save in the Stranger's Room, no talking is, under any circumstances, allowed, and three offenses, if brought to the notice of the committee, render the talker liable to expulsion. My brother was one of the founders, and I have myself found it a very soothing atmosphere.” -- Sherlock Holmes, The Greek Interpreter

If you ever get some of the Hoyle's card games for PC it's on there. Somewhere there is a free download that plays well, too. Found it with Faro, a way outdated game. I'll look in my vault

But for me personally, I've always liked the old english gentleman's club / library look... For sure, Dino. Especially as a book lover. Though I would have to do a lot of the woodwork on my own as my budget would pretty much be gone after purchasing a pair of decent club chairs. Also,I like the idea of a windowless den. Or maybe some very heavy drapes. My dream study/den would have a secluded kind of feel. I want to feel lost to the world in that space. Much to the point really. Haha. Also, who wouldn't want a room where one of those shelves swing out to reveal a hidden staircase. Haha I'm no Dr Frankenstein, so my hidden room would be much more than a tobacco cellar, but still. Haha

Yeah, my head was swimming... truly an incredible place.... the craftsmanship is remarkable. He spent so many years building it and acquiring the contents... the dining hall is on the level of royalty with all the flags above. Everything about it is so over the top.... and he spent relatively few years in enjoying it, massive inheritance taxes prevented it from being passed on. Even in miniature, I would love to recreate the smoking room and library. I guess my Google-Fu has improved since I posted at magazonia...a few pics of the smoking room. I imagine that George Washington Vanderbilt smoke throughout the house, as he was an avid cigar smoker...frankly, there are so many rooms that would lend themselves to enjoying with a smoke, the list would be endless.
