Greeting to one and all.
Back in 1966, for my 16th birthday, mom and pop gave me permission to smoke a pipe....just a pipe....and so I did. Went and bought me a fresh pouch of "Mixture No. 79", loaded up a pipe -that cost me $1.29- and smoked that pipe until I threw up my guts. My head was in the toilet for the first month, and things went downhill fast. I couldn't take the dry heaves anymore and finally stopped smoking a pipe for years. Tried to smoke, on and off, as a young man, and throughout my "salad days" with varying degrees of success. Never really enjoyed piping very much. I was smoking all wrong. Tongue bite, rank juices, smelly ashtrays, filthy pipe cleaners...yech! But those pipes -that I bought over the years- never really left my bucket list. Rick Hacker wrote his Ultimate Pipe Book. I learned to how to buy, and smoke some good tobacco blends (thanks to Wilke's on 55th Street), I joined the International Coterie of Pipe Smokers, read through every page of Tom Dunne's "The Pipe Smoker's Ephemeris", joined the NY Pipe Club, enjoyed hearing Sailor Man Jack's booming voice and ribald stories....yada, yada, yada.....now it's 2018.
Joining some of the forums dedicated to pipe smokers and watching some very informative You-Tube videos showed me the error of my ways. Following the suggestions from pipe-forum members got me to enjoy smoking my pipes again, and the whole ritual of pipe smoking is very relaxing and rewarding.
So, today I joined this forum. I look forward to learning from the guys who know how to do it right. Never too old to learn something new.

Your post reminded me of some of the same things that I did with the pipe back in the 60's!

Thanks for the warm welcomes, and happy to see that other fossilized members are posting here, in their dotage.
Wish there was a specific section on pipe forums, just for other geezers like me...you know so we can talk "pipe" and and share our latest prostate problems, all at the same time. Then all the younger members especially the way too sensitive "snowflakes", can just skip over our rambling comments, and reminiscences of things past. I'm thinking of refurbishing and cleaning out all my vintage pipes with embalming fluid. Tick-Tock!
I jest, of course.

Hope to see other pipers at the NY Pipe Show/March. Look for vultures circling my head, and if you smell decomp....that's me!

adding my welcome/greats Frank from opposite end....40miles East of Buffalo. Glad you got back into it. I too, recall the agony of syrupy aromatics in cheap pipes.
Just wondering if, by chance you can beat 12/29/1940. If so......I done lost my seniority here!

Ed Duncan.....
God Bless you! You win!!! I'm a youngish 68 years old, but I'm told I still think, and joke around like an immature 18 year old...sometimes.

Welcome from Humble Texas! M79 has the same effect on me, and Wilke is still the best.

Thanks for the greetings, and salutations. I'll post from time to time when I think I have something interesting to say or ask. BTW, after I turned 60 years old, I finally realized that everyone is entitled to my opinion. On with the show.... Frank NYC

Welcome from SE Louisiana. Spent 3 years on Governors Island when it was a Coast Guard facility. Wished I had known about all the good cigar and pipe shops in Manhatten back then.

Welcome Frank. I too first took up pipe smoking in 1966. I too almost threw up from Mixture 79. I too spent years in the wilderness not smoking a pipe. I too learned from Hacker and online codgers and other mentors and guides. I too came back to the pipe in the last decade, to end up enjoying it more than ever. Make yourself at home because I suspect that many of us here share a similar history as pipesmokers. Cheers.
