My tastes run a wide range, from classic Pink Floyd to Randy Newman to Matchbox 20.
I can appreciate most music.

The late yet immortal Henryk Szeryng playing Bach’s C-Major solo sonata. Here is a YT of his God-Level recording of the complete sonatas and partitas. There are other great recordings, but this one comes with me to that deserted island! I believe the secret to the greatness of his interpretation is the constancy of his harmonic rhythm, ie. all bass notes in the implied harmony have equal values consistent with and independent of the melodic flow.

I have been listening to the piano playing of James Rhodes. Achingly beautiful stuff. I wanted it to be background music for me and here I am on the front of my darn chair listening to it like it was a world series baseball game on a cheap radio.
I am of course smoking, a big bowled churchwarden of Rimboche S.J., but compared to Rhodes honest beautiful unpretentious playing, I feel too much like a poser, and may switch to a more workman like pipe, a Savinelli 320EX perhaps. And perhaps some Billy Budd Blonde, which is a pretty Git 'er Done kind of smoke.
Give this guy a listen, even if you are not a classical music fan or a fan of great piano. This guy has tapped into something beautiful and true, and you miss it at your own peril.
Or not. What the heck are you listening to me for, or going to a pipe and tobacco web site for musical suggestions. What do I know.

I had the great pleasure of going on one of Vince Gill and Amy Grant’s Christmas Tour. A whirlwind 3 weeks of 22 shows in 20 cities and we were treated like dear old friends. Vince is one of the best musicians I’ve ever played with and Amy is a saint. They are the genuine article! Here is Vince and his beautiful light tenor voice singing “I will always love you” by Dolly Parton from a recent PBS special.

In recognition of Zappadan (Dec. 4-21) here is Dweezil and his God level Zappa Plays Zappa Band performing Frank’s “The Torture Never Stops”. I can’t recommend this DVD highly enough. Frank was a brilliant composer and this is one of his greatest pieces. Dweezil’s solo is nothing short of ecstatic. I’ve seen the show live in Charlotte and it absolutely lived up to and exceeded the hype.
