Welles' movie career is quite checkered. Are you a fan of his movies? Which ones do you like or dislike? My favorites are Citizen Kane (an easy pick, I grant you), Chimes at Midnight, and The Stranger (with EGR). I have enjoyed him as the Shadow, in Mercury Theater and Campbell Playhouse, and the five weeks he substituted for Jack Benny on Benny's show when JB was ill. If you haven't heard those enjoyable episodes, you can hear them here: otrrlibrary.org/j.html 3-14-43 through 4-4-43, and he also appears in the episode when Benny returns, 4-11-43.

My favorite Welles movie is Touch of Evil. Lots of radio excellence too. I like him best in The Lives (or Adventures) of Harry Lime.

I figured it must have slipped your mind, Jim. It is a truly great performance by Welles. A man, corrupted, portrayed perfectly by Mr. Welles.

I've been an admirer of Uncle Fats since I watched Touch of Evil in 1966 in a second-run moviehouse in New York, as part of a double bill. (The other movie was an Audie Murphy western epic, no less.) It was like watching a movie for the very first time. ToE remains my favorite, but I love also Citizen Kane, The Chimes at Midnight, Lady from Shanghai and The Immortal Story, all of which I now own in blu-ray. A bio docu titled The Magician is also a favorite. I also like him as a narrator (him and William Conrad had the best voice in show business) and as an actor (The Third Man, with that cuckoo clock line!).

The Third Man. The middle of it is pretty confusing but the movie is so wonderfully shot that it doesn't matter.

Lady From Shanghai is totally confusing, but also wonderfully shot I think they call it the 'Rita Hayworth Effect'.

I'd pretty much have to say all of the above. Didn't know about Welles filling in for Benny, Jim - sounds like a lot of fun!
Cool that there are so many OTR people here!

Lady From Shanghai is totally confusing, but also wonderfully shot Welles irritated me no end with that ersatz Irish accent.

I forgot to mention Jack Benny appeared in June Moon on The Campbell Playhouse with Welles. It's worth listening to.

As addicted to all things film as I am, I am ashamed to say that I have yet to see Citizen Kane.

this would have been awesome if he ever got around to actually making it. It would have been good. I think that The African Queen is as close as Hollywood will ever get.

Apocalypse Now is a great version of Heart of Darkness. The John Malkovich version, not so much

Let us not forget his role as "Father Mapple" in John Huston's movie "Moby Dick", 1956.

I think I prefer his radio work to his movies, except for Citizen Kane (love that movie).
He was on the Fred Allen radio show several times too - those spots are great.
