...a couple of thoughts, though I commented previously...
When I began smoking a pipe (early 1970s) building a cake was considered di rigueur, and it worked fine for me for a long time. It's just been the past 10 years or so that I've come to see it, for myself, as unnecessary.
YMMV

It's been said before, but I don't think things like this were an issue in the past. People just smoked their pipes.
Perhaps we think about things too much these days. I know I do. There's no hope for me... Save yourselves.

I just run a light duty bowl brush around the bowl of my cobs at the end of the day. This maintains a nice smooth char on the bowl wall.

Experiment in progress.....I recently bought a Dr. Grabow meerschaum lined pipe, minus the meerschaum lining. I anticipate that the pipe will smoke hot, but curious as to whether the buildup of a cake will make a difference.

Yo The
Early in my pipstering, I too got a pipe that must have had a meer liner. The rim and air draft hole showed signs of smoking, but the chamber was bare wood. there were several concentric rings inscribed in the chamber and I surmised they were there to retain the meer bowl. The remaining bowl walls were pretty thin. I broke it in carefully, and early on it did smoke hot. But once the cake built up, the pipe became a fine puffer.

that is my experience too with a De-Meered Dr Grabow. I also helped it along initially by pressing some salvaged cake into the cracks and crevices of the bowl.

Smoked a bowl in the pipe this week. It started out hot, but seemed to cool down a bit. Still have a way to go with it, but somewhat encouraging.

I don't think that I have any real cake in any my pipes. After every other bowl or so, I hit it with pipe cleaners. If I have any noticeable thickness I usually ream lightly with the spoon on my tool.

If any of you have hot smoking pipes, a dimes worth of cake will make a difference. If you have not tried it, give it a shot. You have nothing to lose as you can always ream it after.

that is my experience too with a De-Meered Dr Grabow. I also helped it along initially by pressing some salvaged cake into the cracks and crevices of the bowl. I didn't press any cake into the bowl, but I did fail to mention one thing. With the Meer lining missing, the bottom of the bowl was quite a bit deeper than the draft hole of the pipe. Since that would be an invitation to a gurgling pipe, I packed the bottom of the bowl with pipe mud, up to the draft hole. Seems to have worked very well!

Solid as a rock right now! I don't think it's going anywhere soon. Once the cake builds in it, I think that it's permanent!
