I enjoy reading JimInks' and Pipestud's reviews on this website.
Anyone else care to reveal who they are?

I have been impressed with "GentlemanZombie". Great reviews and a Cob afficionado.

JimInks & Pipestud are the Gold Standard in my book. Quite a few very dedicated individuals on the site.

Many good ones on TR but I always form my own opinion prior to even looking there. Then, I'll go on and see who feels the same way about a blend. After several rounds of this, I've discovered who my "go to" reviewers are.

JimInks, StevieB, Pipestud and a few others. To be honest, I get most of my new ideas for what to try, from reading what gets posted here.

I look at TR after I try something, or before I try one to see what tobaccos are used in a blend, and to get a feel for the strength of it. Everyones opinions are mostly subjective as personal tastes differ. Jiminks reviews seem to be the most objective, so he's my go to guy, but I do like reading other reviews from time to time.

I wish TR would implement a 1/2 star option. Many blends are better than 2, but don't quite deserve a 3 star rating.

Useful tool for those trying out new blends. Jiminks' reviews are the main attraction - Solid and always trustworthy. Still, tough to beat ordering a couple ounces, perhaps trading for a sample, stuffing it in a pipe, firing it up and forming one's own opinion.

I dislike those reviews authored by someone who states the blend is out of their wheelhouse and then proceed to denigrate the tobac/genre. It would seem that some reviewers can only report from a negative mindset.

In fact, some months ago I started giving a more accurate description of strength and taste levels in my reviews because I felt, for instance, "mild to medium" wasn't enough of a focus. So I let the reader know where is the middle those levels are.

I have used tr as a guide since the site started. I had no idea what was in blends and I was looking for blends I might like to try. I used reviewers like Tantric,Sykes willford,Newman and others. I would see if they liked a blend that I did, and if so would look at their other reviews. I found most of my favorites doing this. Blends like F&T Cut Virginia Plug was one of the first I found because of a Sykes Willford review.
I still use the site today but differently. Now I ask jiminks if there is something I might like and that has no red virginia's and he will point me in the right direction. I will read his review first and then some others from people who I feel may have similar tastes to mine.
I think tr is a great resource that can be used in many different ways.

I don't read reviews. I have nothing against people who write them and their followers. In all honesty, in my over 30 yearss of pipe smoking the only review that matters is mine, which is a thumbs up or down. I know what I like!

I would add, that the Search Box seems greatly improved at TR, making use of the site much easier.

I find the site very useful. With over 500 blends active on the market it provides the basic parameters that make sense of the product. So many blends provide so little detail as to what's in the product that without tobaccoreviews there would be even less confidence among consumers in manufacturers.

My favorite reviewer on TR is "Deleted Account". He has written a ton of reviews and has even managed at times to post multiple reviews of the same blend.
As to who is who on TR, I haven’t written many reviews, but it is pretty easy to figure out my user name there.

My reviews on TR.com are wholly subjective, they are my feelings on the blend and I make no attempt at objectivity. I think the best way to use tobaccoreviews.com, is to find reviewers who like tobaccos you like and dislike tobaccos you dislike, for the same reasons. In this manner, you can avoid a lot of blends that you probably won’t like and find many, many new blends that were not on your radar, as these reviewers have done the hard part of trying the blends first. Now by all means I think you should try to expand your tobacco palate as much as possible and occasionally try blends that you don’t think you will necessarily like, but just have a urge to try. But by following several reviewers whose tastes are close to yours, you can go through their respective reviews and look for 3 and 4 star tobaccos that you will have a high likelihood of enjoying. At $9.00 to $20.00+ per tin, I don’t like wasting money chasing down tobaccos that I probably won’t like anyway.

I will periodically go over to TR and read reviews of a blend as I smoke it. It allows a direct comparison to what I am experiencing. Sometimes agreeing with what's posted and sometimes scratching my head.

philo, totally agree. I have saved tons of money over the years by using TR. I have not bought a new blend without checking the reviews since I first saw that site. It is really easy to ignore the reviewers who don't have a clue.
truculentfrogs, I will do that as well. Sometimes it is good for some serious laughs.

Everyone's favorite is hated by someone else, so I rarely go there anymore. Just like every cigar review has cedar notes, hint of Earth, leather taste, etc...SSDY

I have honestly read Pipestuds reviews for years and the more I read the more I saw Jims name so I began reading his as well. Both are excellent reviewers although Jim makes me realize that I have no taste buds lol. I am hoping to meet pipestud someday. I was in a yahoo pipe club/forum years ago...maybe 2007 and I was a newbie. He asked for my address and sent me 3 pipes and a bunch of baccy to try. That generosity is what made me continue to smoke a pipe. I have never had a chance to repay him so hopefully one day, maybe even at the Chicago Pipe Show, I can at least thank him in person.

mwps70, I was also in a Yahoo pipe chat room with pipestud back around 2000-2001 I think. Were you there when it was me and Mark Craney and Robbw? Pipestud was a wealth of knowledge and was always good for some laughs.

There are a few veteran TR reviewers whom I rely on for guidance, most often AFTER I've sampled a blend, so as to confirm or refute my objective/subjective findings and to guide my decision to cellar-up shallow or deep. One reviewer stands handily above the rest for me. In all, I find TR most useful, and sometimes a follow-up phone discusion helps to tease out subjective nuances, pedigree, etc...

Jim's reviews are great because they explain the product rather than Jim's personal feelings about the tobacco. Gentleman Zombie is a favourite too- Our palates are similar, so I often look for his reviews in particular.
Sometimes it's even nice to read reviews on blends I've already smoked (or as I smoke them) in order to get ideas on what to look for in a baccy- Sometimes it surprises me to find I've overlooked a note someone else readily noticed.
