I just received my new Mark Twain from the only MM supplier that I know of in the UK (I haven't looked terribly hard - it was the first one I came to). They have great service and a very fast turnaround. However... Here's my new pipe... Is this acceptable as a premium MM product? I would have thought this would have been a second. What are your thoughts? P.S. I emailed the company and voiced my thoughts on the matter and they did credit £5 back to my card, so fair dues to them. Their reply was that all of their cobs are chipped, and they sent me the following picture to show that fact...

It would bother me. I’d fire it up.

Most of mine have some chips. Couldn’t care less. They are cheap and smoke great=win. Cons are a bit brittle, but at $5-10 a pop, they are a great carefree smoke.

Smoke it. You didn't buy it to look at.

Really no biggie,as long as it isn't cracked or slip. It will take a few bowls to get a good char, untill then you may taste a bit of corn in the smoke.

I've received a few cobs in that shape. I like the character. Reminds me - vaguely - of the plateau on the Freehand.

You're right. I don't buy them for the aesthetics. I just thought it was slightly sub par.
Gonna fire it up this weekend.

The whitish color that we/ve been seeing in cobs for the last few years (as opposed to the yellow hue in older MMs) is due to a decline in cultivation that was due either to a crop sellout or, as was given out at the time, some problem with the crop itself. I tend towards the former explanation. It was reported in trade news back then. Wished I had kept the digital copy. These whitish cobs come from corn cobs that are not fully mature as was formerly the case. I could be wrong, but I don't think so. My older cobs don't chip and do not char badly at the rims. The newer whites tend to do that.

Yep, that's normal from my experience.

it's part of the character of the pipes. I believe Aristocob ships internationally and they are awesome to deal with. They have a generous selection and have MM cobs I haven't seen elsewhere.

In new cob prep, I use wood glue to back fill the chips. I use Titebond as it dries yellowish. Over time, these fills will darken to a tobacco hue, much like a meet.

now I feel super-bad for the £5 refund. I've emailed the store and asked them to take £5 back. It's only fair.

I'd reckon it's pretty much the nature of the beast. The more narrow cobs don't show as much chipping. The main thing is for you to enjoy the smoking of them. Hoping Spring comes soon!

That's how much it cost originally (well, £9.25) OK, I didn't realize it was a partial refund. All in all, an acceptable response. They seem to be an ethical vendor.

...I've really been enjoying Cobs/Hardwoods from MM more lately... still love briar, but the Cobs/Hardwoods are so easy, no "ghosting", low maintenance, etc...
